Do Nice Girls Finish Last?

We all know the golden rule – “treat others the way you want to be treated.” Simple, right?

Well, yes and no. There’s nothing wrong with being nice and in general it’s a wonderful trait to have. The world could use more kind, generous, and caring people. However, it’s definitely possible to be too nice and this can become a problem. When you are constantly putting the needs of others above your own and giving all you have, the person who ends up suffering the most is you. And let’s face it – no one wants to be a doormat. As someone who lives by the mantra “be nice, work hard, stay humble” – it was definitely a shock when I realized that there is such a thing as being “too nice.”

While I’m not saying you should quit being nice to people in general, it may be worth rethinking the way you’re giving your time and energy, especially if your giving ways leave you feeling drained or taken advantage of.

Do Nice Girls Finish Last?

Why can being too nice be a problem?

For the most part, being nice is a good thing. But there are some negatives to being too nice.

– People may perceive you as weak. When you’re always putting others first and trying to go above and beyond, you could be viewed as weak or easy to take advantage of. If you don’t set your own boundaries and put yourself first, no one else will. If you don’t want to be treated as a doormat then don’t allow others to perceive you as such.

– It can be draining. Do you always say yes to every invite? Are you always taking on extra work or putting in the most effort in a group project? When you don’t know how to say no, you can end up exhausted and unhappy.

– You attract takers. You know the saying, “your vibe attracts your tribe?” When you’re always giving and giving, you can end up attracting the wrong kind of people that are looking to take advantage of you.

– You have unrealistic expectations for friends and family. When you are always going above and beyond for the people you care for, it can be easy to expect that treatment in return. In reality, you are only setting yourself up for disappointment.

– You don’t put yourself first. Again, self-love is so important. When you forget to be kind to yourself, you invite stress, anxiety, and other negative emotions.

Do Nice Girls Finish Last? How to Tell if You Are "Too Nice" and What to Do About It

How to tell if you are “too nice”

– You don’t know how to say no. Have you ever looked at your calendar and thought it was filled with things you didn’t actually want to do? That’s a sign you say yes to everything, even if you don’t actually want to.

– You care about what other people think of you and are willing to do and say whatever it takes to be accepted and well-liked.

– In group situations, your opinion is never heard. You avoid confrontation at all costs and let others make driving decisions because you’d rather let someone else make the decision than voice a contradicting opinion.

– You find yourself doing favors for people you barely know. (And feeling resentful and taken advantage of for saying yes.)

– You never have time for yourself.

Do Nice Girls Finish Last? How to Tell if You Are "Too Nice" and What to Do About It

What to do if you’re “too nice”

The older you get, the more like yourself you become.

Have you ever heard this saying?

My thoughts on this: at some point it becomes too exhausting to try to be someone else. We are who we are and while we should always try to improve ourselves and be the best version possible, there are certain things about us that we can’t really change.

If you’re a nice person by nature and your nature inclination is to always help and say “yes,” you shouldn’t have to fight it and change who you are. Every quality is a strength and a weakness depending on the situation – the key is making the most of the positives while avoiding the negatives.

You should still be the nice person you are – it’s so important to be authentic, and people will appreciate you for being yourself. What you can do, however, is be more choosy with your time and energy.

Learning how to say no, voice your opinion, and hold your ground is an invaluable skill to have. You only have time to say “yes” to so many things, so be picky about how you spend it. Honestly, it’s ok to be selfish sometimes and put yourself first.

At the end of the day – keep being yourself.

I really, really believe in the power of kindness. Yes, in the short term you might get taken advantage of or encounter some negative people. But – I’m all about the long game. And in the long run, giving more than you receive the way to go. If you’re not sold I highly recommend reading Adam Grant’s book, Give and Take. After a couple interactions recently that left me feeling drained and stepped on, I was questioning my mantra and the extreme value I placed on “being nice.” Re-reading Give and Take helped me gain a renewed sense of belief in the power of giving and squashed any notion that I should be more of a taker.

On that note – I’ve had a tough time getting my creative juices flowing of late, but these types of topics help with inspiration and writer’s block. Is there anything else you’d like to see more or less of on the blog? As always, thank you so much for stopping by and reading.

We all have a story to tell. Someone at work told me that our careers (and our lives) are more of a mosaic than a ladder, and I realized it’s so true. What he meant is that it’s not one clear cut path of one step to the next that has brought you to where you are today. Rather, the combination of all of your life experiences together creates the image and story of who you are today. I’m still trying to figure my story out – what experiences I want to have, the kind of person I want to be known as… and that got me thinking. What’s your story? Have you ever given this question some thought?

What’s Your Story?

By definition, a story is an “account of events” and varies by person. There is the truth, but there are also lies and embellishments.  Always remember, there are two sides to every story : ).

So tell me: what’s your story?

The way you tell your story matters. Whether we like it or not, we live in an age where everyone can be their own publicist thanks to social media. If you’ve ever had to write your own bio or gone to a job interview, you know what it’s like to craft your own narrative. Beyond personal stories, every brand has a story to tell.

Beyond personal stories, every brand has a story to tell.

How your craft and tell your story is very, very important. Even for brands and small businesses! When it comes down to any business, branding is everything.

Do you know the stories of your favorite brands?

The other day I listened to this podcast featuring Michael Mente, the founder of Revolve. If you have the time, it’s a must listen. (A little tip – sometimes I listen to my podcasts on 1.5x speed on my iPhone.)

Obviously, Revolve is super successful. Even though I have shopped at the site for almost a decade, I never knew the backstory of how the massive retailer got started.  Hearing Michael’s story of how he built Revolve to what it is today was so inspiring and mind blowing.

All businesses have to start somewhere. Which is why I love shopping and supporting small businesses. The amount of passion, hustle, and grit that it takes to get something off the ground starting from nothing is unimaginable to most people. And they always have a story to tell. If you know a small business owner or watch Shark Tank (LOVE!) you know what I’m talking about.

That’s why it’s so important to shop small (and local!). These brands really need your support and business, and every little bit helps them. Next time you stop by a neighborhood shop or boutique, stop and ask what their story is. It might blow you away!

Two brands (both owned by badass women!) that I’ve been able to work with and support:

Flair the Label and Sticks + Stones. Learning about these brands and hearing the stories behind them taught me how much passion has to go into a passion project. Every piece is made with love and there are literal blood, sweat, and tears involved in starting a new brand from the ground up.

Bloggers are often eager to work with big brands – they’re established, have budgets for influencers, and have a lot to offer you. Lately, I’ve taken a step back and focused more on working with smaller brands. Letting go of my ego and personal agenda, and truly collaborating with others in a way that is not only mutually beneficial but also fun.

That’s a huge part of what I want my story to be: building genuine relationships and collaborations. Giving more than I take and adding value to the brands I choose to work with.

SO – definitely check out Flair and Sticks + Stones. And ask about their stories : ).

Another Coachella has come and gone. Every year, the festival is a completely new and different experience. It’s hard to condense three jam packed days into one post, so here are some of the highlights of my weekend and all the details on what I wore.

Straight to the festival! Dressing for the actual festival is always tricky because of the desert climate. It can be SO hot during the day but then temperatures plummet as soon as the sun goes down. For this reason, it’s important to 1. stay hydrated and 2. dress in layers! I cannot stress this enough. I have a slight tickle in my throat today so I wasn’t entirely safe from the post Coachella blues. But I am convinced that bringing a denim jacket (I think I’ve worn this one from Blank NYC almost every day since I’ve gotten it) saved me from a worse fate ; ).

Spent the weekend without my Instagram husband in tow, what’s a blogger to do when she’s without her better half behind the lens? In all seriousness, I’m super happy and grateful I was able to snag some shots at The Zoe Report’s ZOEasis hanging with my girls Roshni, Madison, and Javvy. I was also able to meet up with one of my favorites photographers, Jordan, to sneak in a couple shots in the desert. Apologies for the lack of festival shots, I promise there will be more next year!

The last day was a short one for me. I skipped out on the festival to stop by the Galore Brunch with R+Co before driving home – I had work Monday morning and to be honest was exhausted after two days of the festival… #old. For those of you going to Weekend 2, hope you found some outfit inspo from Weekend 1! The looks this year were killer. Until next time, Coachella!

You guys, Coachella is in a week (!!) and you could say I still have so much to do to get ready.

I decided to go pretty last minute and have given almost zero thought to planning. If you’re going to festivals this summer and aren’t sure what to wear, be sure to check out this post. One thing I do have down? My festival bag. When you’re going to be in the sun all day, you gotta be prepared.

Of course, you could run around all day and night without anything in your bag (maybe you don’t have a bag at all!) and be totally fine. But… I like to be ready for anything. So here’s what’s in my festival bag – all the essentials.
leather festival bag

What’s in My Festival Bag?

LEATHER BACKPACK:

First things first, you need the perfect bag. When it comes to festivals, I always bring a backpack. This way you can simultaneously be hands free and carry more than you would be able to in a small cross body. Total win. There are so many cute backpacks available right now, so you really have no excuse not to bring one.

I love this one from Sticks + Stones (a newer brand and if you haven’t heard of it, you need to check it out ASAP!). Sticks + Stones has the ultimate festival accessories – you can bet I’ll be bringing my backpack to Coachella and incorporating this necklace and cuff into an outfit.

SUNSCREEN:

This is a MUST. If you’re going to roam the desert with only two things, my recommendation would be water and SUNSCREEN. Sunscreen is 100% a must. As I get older, I am wayyy less about sun and getting a tan, and all about preventative skincare. If I’m going for some color, I’ll go reach for the bottle or a good spray tan. For everyday sun protection, I alternate between Supergoop! and Kiehl’s. Reallyyyyy trying to avoid getting more sunspots and wrinkles here. A big hat makes a huge difference as well!

SUNGLASSES:

Ok – so everyone has these sunnies. But you know why? Because they look good on everyone. The round shape is super flattering on every face shape, and they go with every outfit. I’ll def be packing these in my bag. Loving statement sunnies for festivals as well – I just scooped up this rad pair from Sunday Somewhere and cannot stop wearing them.

MOPHIE:

Not the end of the world if your phone dies at a festival, but the last thing you want is to lose your friends or sit at a charging station for phone juice. Mophies have a come a LONG WAY. This newest model is way less clunky and gets the job done. Document all (or none) of your festival experiences and never worry about running out of battery.

DRY SHAMPOO:

Festival or not, this spray is a holy grail product. This term is not thrown around lightly. If you’re only going to use one hair product, ever, it should be this dry texturizing spray. When you’re outside all day, your hair is going to get dirty anyway, but this spray does it all. It adds the right amount of texture, keeps it fresh, and smells divine. Get a travel size bottle for all your getaways and thank me later.

Keep your festival makeup light and simple. Think: tinted moisturizer, brows, mascara. Or if I want a little more, some glitter if I’m feeling really festive. But I avoid the heavy contour and layering of products. Simple is better, you’re in the sun and likely sweating all day so it’ll come off anyway. A natural glow is the perfect touch – this all-in-one product is your best bet to give a subtle highlight and keep your look minimal and fresh. Dab onto the top of your cheeks, your brow bones, and any other spot you want to gently highlight and accentuate.

If you have any other questions on what to bring along in your festival bag, LMK in the comments below and I’ll make sure to get you covered!
