This post was sponsored and written in partnership with Neutrogena. As always, all opinions are my own.

As much as I love spontaneity and adventure, I’ve come to love a good routine. There’s something about having a daily routine and the familiarity and comfort that comes with it. Routines keeps me grounded and focused during the week. As I’ve gotten older, a huge part of my routine has become centered around wellness and taking care of myself overall.

Boosting My Routine with Neutrogena + A Giveaway !!

I’ve been making a more concerted effort to sleep more, drink water, eat well, and exercise, and it has truly helped so much in terms of mental and physical health. Another huge part of my routine is skincare. I firmly believe that proper skincare does not need to take lots of time everyday, and good products do not have to be expensive. In fact, some of my favorite products can be found at the drugstore for under $20. That’s why I’m so excited to share how I’ve been boosting my routine with Neutrogena products – one of my absolute favorite drugstore brands.

Growing up, my mom was adamant that I could find great and affordable skincare products. Together, we would scour magazines for tips and explore the drugstore aisles. One brand that was always in my skincare rotation – Neutrogena. The sunscreen was a staple in our household (thank you, Mom, for teaching me the importance of wearing SPF, even if I did not always listen!), and the eye makeup remover and makeup removing wipes were must-haves when it came to removing harsh dance makeup. Today, I find the same products and more under my bathroom sink. After over a decade of using them, they really are tried and true products.

Makeup Remover Wipes

Makeup removing wipes are one of those products that really are a lifesaver. I keep these wipes in my gym bag to remove any makeup on my face before and after a workout. This step is absolutely crucial if you have a full face of makeup on. Nothing clogs pores and causes breakouts more quickly than not removing your makeup. Seriously, do not sleep in your makeup! Coming from someone who has learned the hard way. The best part about these wipes is they remove even the most stubborn eye makeup. Total winner in my book.

I also like to keep an extra set of skincare products in my gym bag (currently loving this cute tote bag from Sticks + Stones) – I’ve added the new Hydro Boost Multi-Vitamin Booster with the tried and true Hydro Boost Water Gel to my bag so I’m never stuck without a hydrating facial product. I have extremely dry skin. So between the daily sweat sessions and extra face washes I’ve added to my routine, I need a good (but affordable) hydrating moisturizer to make sure my skin stays hydrated and healthy.

Before I added this step, I would wash my face with a cleanser I kept in my gym bag. Although I often would not moisturize afterwards because I didn’t have one on hand. Big mistake – so now I’ve learned my lesson. This combination of makeup removing wipes, sunscreen, hydration booster, and moisturizer has made my daily routine simpler and more effective.

Some weekends are for catching up on reality tv re-runs (The Bachelor and Real Housewives, anyone?) and eating froyo… this being one of them. We’re almost done with Dry January, and to be honest it’s been the best way to reset and start off the year. I’m not one for crazy cleanses or detoxes, so cutting out booze and getting some extra zzz’s is the easiest and healthiest (IMO) opinion for me to feel and look better quickly.

Inadvertently, the theme of January has been detoxing – in multiple ways. I talked last week about cleaning out my closet and being more thoughtful in my clothing purchases. With that said, many of my favorite looks this year have incorporated pants. Wide-legged, metallic, cropped – you name it, I am loving all types of party pants at the moment. The best part about different types of pants is, you can wear them to work, brunch, even out for dinner or drinks. They’re super versatile and a fun way to mix up your outfits. Shop some of my favorites below with some easy styling tips for any occasion.

Easy ways to style statement pants

+ Tuck in an oversized turtleneck for an easy, cozy chic look.

+ Wear with a crop top or bralette and layer a duster jacket over.

+ Keep the rest of your outfit monochromatic for a look that can take you from day to night.

+ Play with textures: think classic pieces in silk or velvet for the winter.

+ Don’t be afraid to accessorize with statement pieces.

+ Stick to your basics: you can’t go wrong with a plain white t, or a silk blouse / cami.

One of my goals this year is to create a more thoughtful wardrobe. I want to be more selective in the pieces I buy and minimize the number of clothes in my closet. This isn’t a new concept. Fashion magazines and bloggers love to talk about investing in “wardrobe staples.” The idea is, if it’s classic, timeless, repeatable, it’s worth spending more money on. Patterns, prints, trendy items should be bought from fast fashion sites and on the cheap. Sounds simple enough, right? But look through your closet and see how often you’ve actually applied that reasoning. I know my closet is filled with dresses, accessories, and shoes I’ve only worn once or twice, which makes me cringe just thinking about it.

Over the years, I’ve come to realize the pieces I wear the most tend to be more neutral and basic. Think: white tees, the perfect pair of denim, leather jacket, black boots. Not reinventing the wheel here, but when I’m throwing on an outfit to grab coffee in, it tends to be more laid back and simple. Now that I’m no longer in my early twenties, I’m slowly replacing my worn in basics with timeless, higher quality versions. As much as I love printed dresses and pieces that pop, at the end of the day, you can never go wrong with wearing all black. For me, a thoughtful wardrobe is a well curated one, filled with staples that fit perfectly with a splash of color and unique pieces scattered throughout.

Easy tips for creating a more thoughtful wardrobe:

Wait before pulling the trigger.

Before you buy anything, wait at least 24 hours. You’ll find that once something sits in your cart for a day (or more), you might change on your mind on just how badly you *need* that new swimsuit.

Set an expiration date.

Determine what amount of time an item can go unworn in your closet before it gets tossed. I made a rule that if it doesn’t get worn in a year, it’s out. Don’t be afraid to throw out or donate clothes you don’t wear anymore!

Create a clothing hierarchy.

Not all items are created equal. Think long and hard about how much you’re willing to spend on clothes. Set some guidelines for where you’re willing to splurge. Ex: a good leather or denim jacket will last you forever. It will also most likely be pretty badass once it’s worn in and vintage. Sunglasses, on the other hand, often get lost (depending on who you are). So they might be an area where you want to spend less. Same goes for swimsuits – I’ve found that I’m in a swimsuit less than 20 times a year, but have enough suits that I could wear a different one each time.

Determine what pieces get the most wear.

I spend the majority of my week in clothes I can wear to the office (which luckily is fairly casual) and workout clothes. With that said, I’d still rather buy a classic pair of denim or a cozy sweater than yet another pair of black leggings.

+ Allow for some “fun” or one time pieces.

Sometimes you just gotta get a special piece for your birthday, or your friend’s birthday, or whatever. If it’s something you know you’re only going to wear once, think about if there’s any potential for it afterwards. Can you gift it to a sibling or friend? Maybe it has good resale value on a site like Poshmark? Or you’ll wear it again a few times a year for many years to come? (Ski clothes, a dress you’re determined to wear to more than one wedding, a beach cover up you’ll pack for every upcoming trip). If it can’t be worn to the office, needs to be reconsidered.

Some pieces of mine that have been getting a ton of wear lately? These striped pants from Flair the Label (surprisingly versatile – think with a plain tee or black turtleneck during the day or paired with a crop top or bodysuit at night), my favorite backpack from Sticks + Stones, and these white slides from Chinese Laundry.

Under $50

Glossier Phase 1 Set: for $40 you get some of my favorite Glossier products – the Milky Jelly Cleanser, Priming Moisturizer, and Balm Dotcom. You can’t go wrong with gifting one of their sets (Phase 1 or Phase 2) to any beauty lover.

Elizabeth Stone Jewelry: Elizabeth’s gold + colorful stone pieces are always a crowd-pleaser. Jewelry style can vary from person to person, but you can never go wrong with simple pieces such as delicate rings, chokers, or hoops – all of which are made with a fun twist (druzy, opal, moonstone, etc.).

Metallic Lacquer Tray: these trays are perfect for adding a small decorative touch to any room. I have these on my dresser, on my coffee table, in the bathroom – and come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors so you’re bound to find one for everyone.

Swell Water Bottle: not only are you gifting something environmentally friendly, Swell bottles also happen to be really, really cute. You can never have too many reusable water bottles either – these make great gifts and stock stuffers!

Planner: because new year, new you – and what better way than to help your girlfriend get organized for 2018?

Spiralizer: even if you aren’t the biggest cook, I cannot rave enough about how wonderful spiralizers are (and they’re very inexpensive!) – gift this to your health nut/foodie friend and she will adore you (and invite you over to eat zucchini noodles for dinner).

Splurge

Gucci Card Case: so much more convenient than a large, clunky wallet. A card case is ideal for everyday use and for carrying just the essentials. One from Gucci is chic enough to carry on its own.

Dyson Hair Dryer: the nicest hair dryer you will ever use. Definitely a splurge, but so, so worth it if you blow dry your hair every day.

Gray Malin Prints: Gray’s prints are showstoppers – they brighten up any room and take you someplace far, far away. You’ll be ready for your next vacation instantly.

Stuart Weitzman OTK Boots: classic, high-quality boots that are worth the price and will last you for years and years to come. An investment, but unlike a pair of heels, you’ll wear them all the time.

Sticks + Stones Backpack: one of my favorite bags of the year – it’s unique, beautiful, and holds up incredibly well. Not to mention it’s perfect for traveling, being on the go, or just carrying around day to day.

One question I get asked a lot (and have wondered myself) is how to determine how much to charge for a freelance service. As you might already know, I’m a huge proponent of the side hustle. But outside of your typical corporate career, how do you get paid? And how much? I feel like talking about money, in general, is considered somewhat taboo. But when it comes to anyone with a freelance career, bloggers especially, it became an almost impossible topic to get any real information on or learn much about. I was recently inspired by reading Refinery 29’s popular series of posts, Money Diaries.

I love the mission behind Money Diaries. Refinery 29 started the series of posts to highlight women across the world. Specifically how these women make and spend their money. They say on the website:

“…We’re tackling what might be the last taboo facing modern working women: money. We’re asking millennials how they spend their hard-earned money during a seven-day period — and we’re tracking every last dollar.”

Taking a stab at breaking through this topic, I thought I’d share some of my thoughts and experiences on making money through a side hustle or by freelancing.

Here’s how to determine how much to charge for freelance services:

Figure out the scope of work.

How much work are you being asked to do? What is the scope of the project? Whether you have a fixed hourly rate or a variable rate depending on services delivered, make sure you have an idea up front of how much work you will have to do in order to complete a project. For example: for photographers, a one hour shoot for bloggers probably requires a different amount of work than an editorial shoot for a brand’s lookbook or a wedding.

Freelance writers may want to have a better understanding of how many articles they are being asked to complete and how much research and detail needs to go into each. Influencers may be asked to create one single image for a brand. Sometimes it’s an entire video or lookbook. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to clarify the project at hand!

Blogger Tips & Tricks: Determining How Much to Charge For Freelance Services | by The Luxi Look

Identify your personal value.

What are you bringing to the table? Years of experience and expertise? A unique skill or talent? A large social audience? You need to be bringing value through the services you are offering! It’s okay to do work for free to build up your network, your experience, and the quality and professionalism of your work. Don’t be afraid to learn and grow through doing work for trade – you never know what doors might open up!

Once you feel comfortable with the value you’re offering, you can set a price for your services. This rate may vary from project to project – after all, freelancing really is the wild, wild west.

Consider everything you bring to the table.

Say you are a freelance photographer. You may charge an hourly rate for your services, but you also need to account for your equipment (camera equipment is EXPENSIVE), your skill and expertise that you’ve built up over time (a photographer with 10 years of experience is very different than a photographer with only 6 months), and the time and energy spent on editing (which is oftentimes the most time consuming part!). If you’re working on larger productions, you may also need to account for assistants and any additional staff on your team. This may explain why there is a huge discrepancy in rates – some photographers may offer their services for free, while others charge thousands per hour or have a fixed day rate.

For influencers, the size of your audience can determine your rate. This can include a combination of your reach (how many people see your posts on different platforms) and influence (ability to convert sales or drive traffic). Unsure waht to charge? A general marketing rate is cost per thousand (CPM), or rate per thousand impressions. A couple years ago, I read on a popular fashion blogger’s site that she charged $10 per every 1,000 followers on Instagram, but this is probably no longer entirely accurate.

Blogger Tips & Tricks: Determining How Much to Charge For Freelance Services | by The Luxi Look

Determine the value of this partnership.

Are you receiving anything in return for the services asked? Whether it’s free product or the opportunity to have your brand cross promoted to a large audience. You should also consider the potential non-monetary benefits of taking on a certain project. I totally get that the hustle is real when you rely on income from freelance work. Just keep in mind that not all value comes in the form of money!

At the end of the day, freelancing can be incredibly stressful but also incredibly rewarding. You are your own boss and responsible for seeking out and taking on various projects. You have to hustle, and then hustle some more – there’s no one handing you projects or telling you what to do.

Make friends in your industry.

One thing I’ve found incredibly helpful is making friends in a similar industry and having someone to bounce ideas off of and talk to. I think having a strong support system is essential in order to have open dialogue on topics that may feel taboo or hush hush.

Transparency and authenticity are so important in the freelance industry. It’s disappointing and disheartening to see so many people taking shortcuts and choosing to deceive brands and partners. Which is why taking steps towards open conversations and transparency in the industry is so valuable.

Freelancers and creatives – what are your thoughts on setting rates and finding work?

xx, Amy
