Wedding season is fast approaching, and it’s got me thinking about what to wear (naturally). I’ve realized that it’s a bit of a tricky situation for most women. You likely don’t want to buy a dress for just that one occasion. Personally, I hate the thought of buying a dress (or anything for that matter) and only putting it to use once. What a waste! And let’s be real, weddings can get expensive, fast. The last thing you want to do is blow a ton of cash on a long, formal dress that you’ll wear once.

It’s important to shop smart when choosing what to wear to a wedding. While I generally believe that rules are made to be broken when deciding what to wear, weddings are an exception. There are a few rules that are meant to be followed…

Best Dressed Guest Rules

1. Do not wear white.

This really should be a no brainer, but you would be surprised how many people inadvertently show up to weddings in ivory or cream dresses. Unless the bride says it’s okay for guests to wear white, I repeat, do not do it! A little white is okay, as long as it is not the primary color of your outfit. If you’re unsure of the shade of your dress, don’t even take the chance. If you gotta ask, it’s better left at home. There should only be one white dress in the room, and it shouldn’t be on you!

2. Pay attention to the dress code.

Look for details on the wedding invitation – the recommended dress code will usually be next to the venue. This can range from more casual attire all the way to black tie – just make sure your outfit fits the venue. For a less formal wedding where cocktail attire is appropriate, I love the idea of wearing a jumpsuit. If it’s black tie, feel free to experiment with colors or prints. In general, I think it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed at a wedding, but if you’re really unsure of the dress code, ask the bride.

3. Cover up.

Ok, so maybe not completely, but this is not the time to bust out your skintight, bodycon minidress. It’s someone else’s big day and you really should not be stealing the spotlight. This doesn’t mean you have to come in a caftan, but you probably should leave some things to the imagination.

Easy enough, right? Now, where to go for dresses…

These are all such good tips and I completely agree! Don’t want to spend too much money on a dress that you’ll only get to wear once. I fully take advantage of weddings with different groups of people to re-wear something though! I love that color-blocked dress you’re wearing, where is it from?

Thank you Tania! I totally agree – if you buy 1 dress you love you can (and should) totally rewear it to different occasions! This particular dress is from Reformation – it’s sold out online (I bought it last summer) but they bring out new styles every week and you’re sure to find one you love. Thanks for stopping by – xx, Amy

  5. Those jeans fit like a dream on you! Well worth the money. My weight goes up and down even though I stay approximately the same size. When I work out a lot, I get muscular fast and when I don’t after a couple of weeks, when I’m on top of my workout, most of my jeans fit amazing. When I stop for 2 weeks, I lose muscle really fast, so the jeans fit, but not as well as before. T_T It’s kind of crazy, so I also like to find good deals on jeans. Love this post. I like Paige denim a lot, too. Sometimes you can score a deal on those. 🙂

Love Paige denim! Totally worth the price as well. It’s crazy how much our size can fluctuate, even when our weight doesn’t. Muscle is more dense than fat, so I personally think it’s better to be lean and toned than ‘skinny fat’ 😉 xx
