My workout routine is constantly changing. I get bored of the same class after a while, not to mention your body plateaus if you keep doing the same thing. If you’re bored with your current routine or not seeing changes in your body, you may want to check out Classpass. I’ve debated writing this post for a long time, because my relationship with Classpass Los Angeles has been on and off.

For those of you that aren’t familiar – Classpass describes itself as a  “new kind of gym membership that grants you access to thousands of different classes at studios and gyms in your city and around the world.

[ EDIT: Since I first wrote this post, Classpass has changed their business model from per class to the current credits system. ]

Classpass Los Angeles - Studios Worth Trying | by The Luxi Look wearing Grana Activewear

The Luxi Look wearing Grana Activewear

Anyone who is familiar with boutique fitness classes understands that they run anywhere from $12-$30 for a single class, with unlimited monthly memberships at some studios running upwards of $300/month! From a value perspective, CToday, pricing for Classpass Los Angeles (may vary in the city you live in) begins at $40/month for 3 classes, $60/month for 5 classes, and $115/month for 10 classes, with options to purchase additional classes through the app if you use up all of your classes for the month. If you’re a boutique fitness class never, this makes having a Classpass membership a no brainer!

I like to switch between the 5 and 10 class per month memberships, which gives me flexibility to try different studios and mix up my routine. While the new Classpass isn’t as much of a deal as the unlimited version, it’s still by far the best bang for your buck in terms of taking a variety of boutique fitness classes. Here are the classes that I think are worth trying on Classpass Los Angeles. These are the studios that I’ve tried and love, some of them I actually buy classes from outside of Classpass as well, because 2-3x a month just doesn’t cut it for me.

My Favorite Classpass Los Angeles Studios

Barry’s Bootcamp

If you want a challenging workout that gives you results, go here. My favorite workout by far – the combination of weights and treadmill intervals will help you reach your fitness goals fast. It’s called “the best workout in the world” for good reason. As far as group fitness goes, it is the gold standard if you are looking for results fast. It can be intense, but you go at your own pace and progress from there.

UPDATE: Barry’s Bootcamp is now 13+ credits on Classpass. I would recommend buying your own class packages (check out the annual class pack sale in December if you can) so you get better selection on class times and spots.

The Studio MDR

Hands down the best megaformer (pilates on crack) workout in the city. I drove from West Hollywood to Culver City/Marina Del Rey for over a year to take classes here. The commute got to be too long, but I still have a huge soft spot for The Studio MDR. Classes on their own are expensive, but worth it! If you find a rare spot open on Classpass, snag it asap!

UPDATE: I would also recommend getting class packages for The Studio MDR, especially for the prime time class slots.

Ballet Bodies

Not a workout class per se, but I’m obsessed with the stretch class. Every time I go to this class, I leave asking myself why I don’t go every week. It’s a must, especially if you have tight hips from running/cycling. Bonus – grab a juice or smoothie from Beverly Hills Juice Company next door after.

Natural Pilates

New favorite pilates studio in LA!!! Go to Stefani’s class. She is hilarious and will make your booty BURN. The WeHo studio is brand new and clean, while the Beverly Hills studio has fewer machines for a more intimate class. Parking on 3rd Street can be a nightmare, but the classes are worth it. My favorites are the Intermediate/Advanced reformer classes and Glutes & Abs.

Fitmix

The Mashup class (half treadmill, half pilates reformer) is intense and rewarding, but I prefer the 60 minute pilates classes. They’re some of the harder pilates classes I’ve found in West Hollywood on a more traditional reformer, and I love the way they make my body feel longer and stronger.

Body By Simone

Such a fun class! Variations of dance cardio and toning. Working out doesn’t have to be serious, and you’ll work up a crazy sweat while doing these classes.

Lagree Underground

New Lagree fitness studio in West Hollywood. WeHo sorely needed a good option with challenging classes, attentive instructors, and an emphasis on form. I’ve tried others in the area and found them sorely lacking. The classes might almost be… dare I say it… too hard?!

The Body Los Angeles

No frills, no-nonsense training. A place to get over your fear of weights and working hard. Show up ready to work and I promise you will see results! All I can say is, I love this place and Jenn (the owner) is incredible.

Other Classpass LA Studios

Sweat Garage

Similar workout to Barry’s Bootcamp. The studio is more bare bones but the classes are insanely tough. Go to Derek’s class – his treadmill portion is the hardest I’ve taken (90 second sprints, whaat?).

JJ Dancer

A really fun class that doesn’t feel like a workout! Even if you’re not a dancer (I’m certainly not), you’ll have so much fun in this class. Choreographed dance moves set to hip hop music followed by a barre-esque toning portion. Also, the Sunday class is 90 minutes!! If you’re looking for something slightly more structured, I suggest checking out Body by Simone.

Training Mate

Fun circuit training based workout. The atmosphere is super social, so bring a friend.

Platefit

Some people love it, I couldn’t handle the vibrations. The vibrating plate made me feel nauseous and the workout was just ok.

Cycle House

Personally not the biggest fan of spin but everyone else seems to love it. This one has a bit of a cult following. Classes are intense and you will sweat a LOT.

Burn 60

I prefer Barry’s + Sweat Garage to Burn 60, but it’s still a good treadmill + weights workout if you’re looking for that. The instructors aren’t as dynamic as the ones at Barry’s, and I found myself having to motivate myself more. Also, it smells like fried chicken when you leave the studio, thanks to the Pavilion’s next door. #willpower

Y7 Yoga

Not your typical yoga class, but a fun vibe and good workout. Heated, set to hip hop music, and in a super dark room with no mirrors (= no judgement). It’s unlike any hot yoga class I’ve ever taken. Less spiritual (if you’re looking for that vibe, I like Modo Yoga), but always a good sweat and workout.

Hot Pilates

I love heated classes, and these get HOT! Normally mat pilates classes don’t do it for me, but I really enjoy the Hot Pilates Sculpt class. You will sweat and leave feeling 5 pounds lighter.

UPDATE: I love this class for a good sweat and light toning, but at 10+ credits per class ($16-$18 per class, depending on the number of credits in your plan per month), I just don’t find it a good enough workout to justify the cost. They also started charging Classpass users for mats and towels, and the last few classes I took were hit or miss. Some instructors are definitely better than others, although the same could be said about most studios.

Classpass Los Angeles: The Best Studios to Try

These are the classes in the West Hollywood/Mid City/Hollywood area that I’ve taken and would recommend. I’ve taken classes at other studios that just weren’t as memorable, so if you have a question about any in the area give me a holler. Now that there’s a limit on the number of classes you take a month, Classpass feels less like a membership to help you find new studios, and more like an affordable way to take boutique fitness classes at a handful of your favorite spots. If you’re used to working out 5+ days a week, you’ll either need to adjust your routine or supplement with a membership elsewhere.

Now that Classpass has switched to an increasingly membership model, it’s no longer the amazing deal it was when it first launched. At this point you have to sacrifice a lot to get the most out of your membership. If you have the budget I would look into committing to one or two studios. If you love the variety, you may find that you increasingly have to pay more and more for the studios you love. I would still recommend Classpass if you are looking to try a bunch of different classes and like to mix it up. But it just isn’t a good enough deal anymore for me to keep the highest tier package. I supplement my workout routine with a yoga or pilates class from Classpass every now and then, but do not rely on it as heavily as I used to.

The Luxi Look wearing Grana Activewear

Grana Activewear

Grana was kind enough to send a couple sets of their new activewear to me to try out. I’ve tested and worn their basics before (here and here) and have always been blown away by the quality and prices of their pieces. Despite having a closet full of yoga pants, I was missing a pair of the perfect black leggings. These photos were quickly snapped with my photog and friend, Lauren, before running off to a bootcamp class together. I wore this black set for the first time and was surprised by how comfortable the material was and how well the fabric wicked off moisture during even a very intense and VERY sweaty workout sesh.

Classpass Los Angeles - Studios Worth Trying

If you never read Marie Kondo’s book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up”, you can now watch the new show on Netflix with a similar premise. The point here? Tidying up, getting rid of clutter, buying less – all signs point towards minimalism trending more than ever in 2019. After doing a major cleaning of my apartment recently, I realized just how much stuff you tend to accumulate. You may not even realize it, but chances are you have a lot more clutter than you realize. After throwing away countless bags of stuff and donating others, I made a commitment to buy less and focus on the things that are truly functional or bring joy to my daily life. Think about it this way – if half the stuff in your home went missing, would you even notice? This philosophy applies to your wardrobe as well.

That’s why my focus for this year is to build a capsule wardrobe – timeless, classic pieces that go with everything and can be worn for years to come. Trendy, seasonal pieces can be supplemented by Rent the Runway Unlimited (I’m also breaking up with fast fashion – but that’s a post for another time).

Here are some of the pieces in my capsule wardrobe that I think could work in anyone’s closet.

Capsule Wardrobe Essential Pieces

Cashmere Sweater

You can wear this with almost anything in the fall and winter, I love it as a layering piece. High quality cashmere will hold up for years, and a basic sweater like this one will always be in style. Start with your favorite color and work to incorporate other neutrals in various fitted and slouchy shapes. For a less expensive version, I like Everlane.

Basic Tees

Once you find the perfect everyday tee, you’ll want to stock up. I love the fit and fabric of these Z Supply tees, and the fact that they aren’t as pricey as other brands.

Everyday Denim

Re/Done makes my favorite jeans, but in my experience finding the perfect denim is very trial and error process. Fit is everything, so pick a day when you’re feeling great and go try on a dozen pairs until you find the perfect one. Denim is always worth buying. I actually read in a recent article that denim brands (such as Levi’s) are jumping onto Rent the Runway in hopes that customers will first try the denim through their subscription, and then buy. How cool is that?

Classic Silk Blouse

I hate pieces that have to be babied and dry cleaned constantly, but a silk button down always looks chic and works in professional and more casual settings. Equipment makes the best version, but you may be able to find less expensive versions that you won’t feel as bad about tossing after a few years. Fun fact – sweat stains on silk are a result of the ingredients in your deodorant, not the actual perspiration. Another reason to use natural deodorant (no aluminum).

Casual Sneakers

Way more than I’d like to spend on a pair of sneakers so I haven’t pulled the trigger but these look good with everything (especially if you can keep them clean).

Black Mules

An office essential. Wear with skirts, denim, trousers, dresses – for those of us that hate wearing heels, a black slide on shoe is way more practical.

Silk Camisole

I’ve talked about this tank top so many times and have since gotten it in more colors. It’s great to have a default top to wear with anything on days I just don’t feel like digging into my closet for clothes.

Leather Jacket

If you’re going to splurge on one item, make it a leather jacket. The leather softens and improves with age, it really will never go out of style, and you can wear it forever.

Winter Must Have: Sherpa Jacket | by The Luxi Look

If you don’t have a sherpa jacket in your closet yet, you’re missing out! Comfort is chic again, and I’ve been living in mine since last winter. It’s “cold” in Southern California and I can’t bring myself to wear a full on puffer jacket (it’s not THAT cold, people!) so I wear my sherpa everyday. You may have seen this teddy jacket all over Instagram last year – it was so popular they re released it this year. In several new colors as well! I was honestly so excited to see it return – I can’t recommend it enough. Be sure to check out some other versions at different price points as well : ) xx

Today I want to quickly introduce you to one of my favorite new shopping platforms, Foray. If you’re not familiar with Foray, it’s essentially a shopping site that incorporates all of your favorite influencers and allows you to shop their closets and favorite brands. You can shop my looks and picks here. I’m all for CURATION and Foray does it perfectly. They include so many of my favorite brands from clothing to accessories. Some of my faves that you can find on the site – We are HAH, Matisse, Raen, Minkpink, B-Low the Belt, and Solid & Striped. To name a few…

Foray has also allowed me to discover new brands. My new go-to brand for luxe basics – Nation LTD. I can’t get enough of their layer-able sweaters and t-shirts for colder weather. I’ve been wearing this cropped cream sweater with everything. It’s so cozy but still chic because of its perfectly draped silhouette. Again, going for a less is more look these days.

Outfit deets below – happy holidays everyone!! xx

I realize, as a fashion blogger, the irony of what I’m about to say. But after buckling down with my finances this year and really re-evaluating where and how I was spending my hard earned money, I made a huge commitment to downsizing my closet and being much more selective about what pieces I choose to buy. I really started to taking my personal finances seriously this year, and after doing a ton of research and planning (news flash: life is expensive), I realized the days of buying a new Reformation dress “just because” are over.

Call this adulting, but I made the decision that someday owning a home, possibly having children, and retiring are way more important than having a closet that screams #goals. When I graduated college and started my first big girl job making more money than I ever had before, I definitely went a little crazy with shopping. Because well, I could. Some of the purchases I stand by to this day – I’m looking at you, Stuart Weitzman 50/50 boots I bought 6 years ago that still go with everything, and a Mackage coat that I wear regularly in the winter to this day.

Other decisions weren’t as smart (sorry, printed DVF wrap dress that I can only wear a few times a year). I’ll say that the biggest shopping mistake I’m guilty of is buying before thinking. See, like all things in life, a good wardrobe requires some planning (and some fun, spontaneous decisions!)

What do I mean by “buying before thinking?”

It means buying something before justifying the purchase and thinking it through. The most important question, which feels like a no brainer now, is – “how often am I actually going to wear this?” I’m so guilty of buying expensive dresses, only to wear them once, and then have them collect dust in my closet. Some of them were $50, others over $200. Honestly it doesn’t matter the price, wearing something only a handful of times and then having it collect dust is the WORST. Buying something because it’s “cheap” or “on sale” is NOT a good reason.

I would so much buy 1 thing full price that I LOVE and know that I will wear all the time, then spend the same amount of money on 6 things at a sample sale, and only wear each thing once (or worse, NEVER AT ALL). There are certain brands that make the absolute cutest clothes – but when you really think about it, let’s be real – you’ll wear it once to a party and never again.

Which is totally fine if you have the budget to support that habit! Truthfully, I don’t. And my closet doesn’t have space to support clothes that don’t get worn (apartments are small, you guys!).

But that’s life, right?

You live and you learn. I’m in the middle of a huge closet refresh, and I’m making a point to only buy staple pieces that I will wear often (think – at least once a month, if not more often). My work wardrobe does not have a rotating door, so I’m choosing to be selective about which neutral, classic pieces I invest in, and which trendy styles I’ll supplement with my Rent the Runway subscription. Also, not investment pieces are created equal! For some people, their essential shoe might be the perfect black pump. I can’t stand wearing heels, so I would forego heels for a classic slide or loafer. I’ll do a post on the pieces I mapped out as “essentials” for my capsule wardrobe – stay tuned.

So let’s say you do the same thing and went a little crazy with fun, but not practical pieces in your closet. What’s a girl to do? The first thing to do is re-evaluate your wardrobe and spending behaviors. Do you buy impulsively because there’s a sale or before you’ve had a chance to think about how they fit into your wardrobe or lifestyle? Are there pieces you haven’t worn in over a year? If so, you should consider tossing or selling them. It’s easy to look at celebrity closets or other bloggers on Instagram and think “wow, they have so many clothes, how amazing” – but honestly, most of them are not wearing 75% or more of the clothes.

Speaking of selling clothes…

I’ve been selling a lot of my clothes on Poshmark. Any resale platform has huge ups and downs, but overall I like it for making the resell process as simple and seamless as possible. I’ve sold clothes on Poshmark that I haven’t touched in over a year, so getting some money back for those is better than nothing at all. Should I do a post on Poshmark and tips for selling?

The items I’m wearing here all fit into my new closet criteria:

+ Leather jacket – I bought this jacket from AllSaints on sale 4+ years ago and it has gotten good use. I love the details on it, but would honestly love something a little simpler. For my next jacket, I’m eyeing one from Acne or Iro. Knowing how much I wear this one and how it’ll truly be timeless, I feel ok (eventually) biting the bullet on one of these.

+ Silk cami from CAMI NYC – I wear this ALL the time. It goes with everything. I love silk camisoles as basics, they’re a little dressier than a basic tee and can be layered underneath so many tops. This top is so versatile, I just bought a similar one in white.

+ Slip skirt – To be honest, this piece is arguably a little trendy. I said my wardrobe was getting streamlined, not entirely boring ok?! How I approached buying this skirt – leopard comes and goes, as do slip skirts and dresses. Most importantly, I could style it for in and out of the office, which is a huge bonus for me since I do work a corporate job. Versatility is key for me!

+ Combat boots – another trendy piece, but one that I believe has staying power. These are from DSW, but Dr. Martens are everywhere this year as well. If you want to splurge, Gianvito Rossi and Prada have amazing options.
