Ciao! Apologies for the delay on this post, I’ve been dying to share our Italy travel diary but jetlag and catching up with life in LA got the best of me, so here we go! Today I’m sharing Rome and Capri, next I’ll share a Positano Travel Guide, so get excited!

Italy Travel Diary: Rome and Capri

Prior to this trip, I’d been to Europe several times before but had never visited Italy. Even before going, I already knew Italy would become one of my favorite countries. My boyfriend and I love to travel and make a point to take one big trip a year. This was a bit of a last minute trip but fortunately we were able to book flights and most of our hotels on credit card points (the best way to travel, seriously!).

Although the Amalfi Coast (Capri + Positano) were the main highlights of the trip, but we were able to get a glimpse of Rome as well. If you’re flying from the West Coast, Europe can feel a bit far – it’s a much easier trip for our East Coast friends (in fact, almost everyone we encountered in Capri and Positano were from Manhattan). If you can fly directly into Rome or Naples, DO IT, because international travel + layovers can be a nightmare.

Rome and Capri

Rome and Capri

We only spent a couple days in the Eternal City.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you certainly can’t get through the city in a day. I could honestly spend weeks exploring the city. Instead of doing all of the typical tourist attractions, we decided to skip the crowds and lines and instead spend the time we had in Rome walking around the city leisurely. Knowing that Italy is definitely a destination we’ll return to, we felt fine skipping the usual “must-sees” and simply wandered around the city.

Going against my extreme type A / obsessive planning tendencies, we enjoyed Rome slowly, wandering from piazza to piazza, stopping regularly for spritzes + gelato. My favorite spots for apertivo time: the courtyard at Hotel de Russie and Ai Tre Scalini.

You really can’t have a terrible meal in Italy, but there certainly are tourist traps (and lots of them). If you’re looking for local and authentic joints with a neighborhood vibe, your best bet is usually to follow your eyes and ears.

From Rome we took a quick 1 hour train to Naples and caught a short ferry to Capri.

It’s much easier to get to the Amalfi Coast if you fly directly into Naples as opposed to Rome, but there is so much more to do in Rome! I would choose Rome over Naples any day. If you have time, stop in Naples for the pizza. They’re famous for their extremely thin crust pizza. We made a pit stop at L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele and it was one of the best decisions we made.

Italy Travel Diary | The Luxi Look

Seriously, life changing pizza.

We’ve done trips where we covered a different city a day in the past – while that is a lot of fun it is also so exhausting and you never really get to “know” a place. A lot of trip guides say you can cover the Amalfi Coast in a day or two, but I HIGHLY recommend staying longer!

Capri actually isn’t pronounced the way it’s spelled (like capri sun, or those awkward 3/4 length pants we all used to wear…) – Italians pronounce it “cahhh-pree!” and will pretend as though they don’t know what you’re talking about if you say it any other way.

When you first arrive in Marina Grande, you’ll want to get the hell out of there. Loud, crowded, and full of tourists – you’ll be wondering why the f*ck did I come to this place?! Every day between 10-4 the cruise ships arrive and it’s a clusterf*ck but towards late afternoon the crowds leave and the town is peaceful and quaint. For this reason you should spend at least one night on the island and experience the real Capri.

Once you get out of the Marina and into the main town square or venture even further out to Anacapri, you’ll find that the island is truly lovely and magical. We spent 3 nights on the island and it was the perfect amount of time for us.

Pictures don’t always tell a full story and although we got several days of sunshine and beautiful weather, it rained on as many days as it didn’t during our week and a half in Italy. Obviously this was entirely out of our control, and while a little bit of rain was fine in Rome, it did limit what we were able to do in Capri.

If you do visit Capri and get beautiful weather (which if you go during the summer months, you should!) here’s what to do:

Visit the beach clubs. The day we spent at La Fontelina was one of our favorites of the entire trip. Get a bottle of rose or a pitcher of sangria, and alternate between lounging on a beach chair and dipping into the sea.

La dolce vita indeed.

We didn’t get a chance to check out Il Riccio (near the famous Blue Grotto) due to the rain, but we heard great things about it as well.

Visit Anacapri – it’s a quick taxi or bus ride from the main square, for some reason we thought it would be a good idea to walk. Little did we know the path to Anacapri is a full on hike with what felt like thousands of stairs. Between the intense hike (seriously, dress for the occasion and bring water – we were so unprepared) and the stunning views from the top, it’ll take your breath away.

Go shopping in the main square. You could easily spend the day browsing the many designer boutiques on the island. If you’re looking for souvenirs or trinkets, Capri is known for their linens and custom handmade sandals.

Eat! Some restaurants we ate at and loved

Villa Verde – because of the rain, we didn’t want to stray too far from where we were staying. Villa Verde was a solid option in the main square with the usual suspects on the menu – pasta, pizza, and a variety of mains. One of the better options to have dinner in the town.

Al Grottino – set “in a grotto,” we loved this restaurant for its intimate feel and simple, home cooked meals. We ate here several times and fell in love with the staff. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu!

Da Paolino – you may have seen photos of this restaurant with its many lemon trees. Although the restaurant was beautiful and lemon scented, it did feel slightly touristy. Still worth a visit if you have time as the ambiance is beautiful in the summer.

Buonocore Gelato – this was definitely a daily (or twice a day) habit for me. They make their waffle cones fresh on the spot. It’s practically impossible to walk by and smell the fresh cones and NOT get a gelato.

Rent a boat – 100% do this if you have a chance

We had originally scheduled a boat tour for a day but had to cancel because of the weather. I was a little disappointed that we did not get to see the famous Faraglioni rocks up close. But it’s really just an excuse to go back to Capri ASAP ; ).

Honestly, there isn’t TOO much to do on Capri. If you’re looking for a jam packed and action filled itinerary for this part of the Italy Travel Diary, you’ve come to the wrong place. The pace of living on the island is very slow. And we honestly spent our days walking around the town, hanging out at La Fontelina, and drinking spritzes. If this isn’t your thing, one full day might be more than enough for you.

Stayed tuned for the second half of my trip + Italy Travel Diary (my personal favorite) – A Positano travel guide!

As always, thank you for reading and if you ever have ANY questions about my Italy trip or are trying to plan your own trip, don’t hesitate to reach out and ask.

Jetlag sure is a bitch. Since coming back from Italy, I’ve been waking up at 4am and starving, feeling tired and sluggish at random hours of the day, and in a general state of mental fuzz. When you cross multiple time zones so quickly, your body is completely out of sync and desperately has to try to readjust to a normal schedule. Without a doubt the first thing I try to figure out everytime I travel internationally is how to beat jetlag.

How to Beat Jetlag

I’m incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to travel and would love to see the entire world someday – but as you already know, traveling takes a tremendous toll on your body. As glamorous as it sounds to have a constant jetset life, I know that it isn’t always as great as it seems. My first job out of college involved flying somewhere every week and let me tell you, the novelty of life on the go wore off quickly.

Traveling disrupts your sleep schedule, your eating and workout routines, and can do a number on your skin and digestive system. Unfortunately, it takes about one day for each time zone crossed to fully recover from the effects of jetlag. I’m still recovering, but a few things have helped enough that going back to work and sitting at a desk hasn’t been as difficult as I anticipated.

ON THE FLIGHT:

Water.

Flying dehydrates you like crazy. I always bring a refillable bottle or buy one of the large 1L bottles from a newsstand before boarding. Ideally you should drink 8 oz or more every hour you’re on the plane.

Be prepared.

I like to pack ear plugs, noise cancelling headphones, an eye mask, a neck pillow, and a sheet mask. You might get some funny looks, but it’ll help your skin from the nasty air in the plane and you’ll be comfortable : ).

Sleep.

If you’re one of those people that can sleep anywhere, LUCKY YOU!! If you’re flying first or business class, same. I don’t mess around with sleeping pills… but I try to turn off any electronics nearby and get as much rest as possible.

Avoid alcohol/caffeine/carbonated beverages.

Alcohol and caffeine will disrupt your sleep and carbonated beverages will bloat you like crazy. It’s all the fun stuff I know, but you’ll feel a million times better when you step off the plane.

Avoid plane food.

Honestly, I don’t touch the food on planes. I usually try to adjust my eating schedule to match my destination over the course of my flight. When flying internationally, you’re often in the air during sleeping hours of your destination, so I usually try to avoid eating anything until I land.

AFTER THE FLIGHT:

Workout.

Ideally outside. Natural sunlight is one of the best things to help you readjust to your new time zone. Getting your blood flowing and breaking a sweat is one of the best cures to any stress : ).

Go to the spa.

Get a massage and relax – it’ll help release the stress that comes with flying and help you sleep better.

Give yourself time.

Even seasoned road warriors often need a day or two to reacclimate. International flights and the jetlag that comes with them are no fun. Although tbh, I’m loving waking up at 5am and going to bed at 9pm. #grandma

How do you beat jetlag?

If you followed me on Snapchat or Instagram stories you most likely saw the meals I was eating in Italy… and well, let’s just say I’d be lying if I said I didn’t come back from Italy with a little vacation weight gain. I’m a tiny bit softer than I was when I left. But honestly, no regrets because nothing beats homemade pasta.

I know a lot of people go away and get a little vacation weight gain and freak out – but honestly it’s mostly just your body holding on to excess water weight since you’re most likely dehydrated from traveling and eating differently than you’re used to. Your body is built to handle small fluctuations and will adapt and bounce back in no time.

Vacation Weight Gain: Getting Back on Track

Now that I’m back home, here’s my plan of attack for the next few weeks as I attempt to get back to feeling normal (the jetlag is not helping either) and a little less puffy.

How To Get Back On Track After A Little Vacation Weight Gain

No alcohol.

It’s possible I drank more wine than water in Italy, but the fastest way to get back to normal sleep and eating patterns is to cut the alcohol.

No fried/processed foods.

As much as I love carbs, it’s a definite no-brainer to eliminate the daily chips that came with happy hour (always a spritz!) and cut down on the pasta and bread.

Limit sugar.

Ugh. I have the biggest sweet tooth ever and this is really hard for me, but dessert on the daily was excessive and all signs suggest that sugar is one of the worst substances for you. Studies have shown excessive sugar can lead to heart disease, belly fat, and potentially even cancer. Yikes.

Sweat 3x a week.

I’m horrible at working out on my own, I spend more time “stretching” in the corner than actually doing anything productive,  so in an effort to actually be effective I turned to boutique fitness classes years ago and haven’t looked back. My absolute favorites in LA are Barry’s Bootcamp and The Studio MDR.

Lots of whole foods.

Thinking smoothies/eggs/oatmeal for breakfast and lots of fruits, veggies, and lean protein throughout the day. My boyfriend and I love to cook dinner together (actually I got extremely lucky and he is an amazing chef : ) I make small contributions here and there) and we try to keep it very clean. Last night we landed and immediately make a big batch of vegetable soup and garlic chicken thighs for dinner. You’re welcome to come over for dinner anytime ; ).

Getting Back on Track

Overall, I live by the 80/20 rule.

If you take the 80/20 rule literally, my philosophy is that if you eat right 292 days of the year, the remaining 73 you can let loose a little ; ). Like a lot of girls, I struggled with finding out what was right for my body and health for a long time and it really wasn’t until I let loose and became more in tune with my body did I actually begin to feel better. Some of the first blogs I ever read and loved were centered around health and fitness, so stay tuned for more posts on these topics!

Truthfully it’s way less about how I look and more about how I feel. By the end of our trip, AJ and I were desperately craving chicken and vegetables (boring, lol). And my body completely rebelled against any and all wine : (. My skin broke out horribly in the worst way in a year and I knew that my daily diet of espresso, pasta, wine, and gelato needed to change. But all good things must come to an end and as much as I LOVED Italy (full recap to come) I couldn’t be more excited to be home and back to work, as dorky as that sounds.

Last thing – can we talk about this heat wave we’ve been having?! Yay or nay to summer year round?!

Feeling Blue

The Luxi Look | Vici Collection

Hiiii friends! I’m currently on my way home back to Los Angeles – long travel days are never fun, but this trip was one for the books. I can’t wait to share more photos and a full trip recap! But a sneak peek – Italy is one of my favorite places I’ve ever visited, the Amalfi Coast is absolutely breathtaking, and don’t even get me started on the FOOD and WINE. I am still dreaming of some of the meals I ate in Italy!

If you’re thinking about visiting – RUN, don’t walk, because I guarantee the beach towns of the Amalfi Coast will be swarming next summer! A full recap will be up soon, so keep your eyes out for that!

In the meantime, how have you been? Not sure if it sounds weird to say, but I missed you guys! It feels so good to be coming home. I can’t wait to catch up this week at all hours of the day while I fight jetlag. Speaking of jetlag… what are the best tips to beat it ASAP? Is that even possible? I’m honestly dying to know, because jetlag is the worst. So if you have any secrets, PLEASE SPILL!

Blue Dress From Vici

These photos are from earlier in the month, but I wanted to share because HOW CUTE is this dress from Vici? Now that we’re almost in October I promise I will get fall fashion posts up ASAP ; ). As much fun as Europe was, I’ve been dying to get back into my routine in LA, back to blogging (+ work), and back to the beach! Even though the post-vacation blues are real, coming home to LA is as close a vacation as you can get! You’re always an hour or so from the beach (sometimes even less!) so if you ever need an escape… Malibu is the perfect place for that.

Being Present

Be Present in the Moment | The Luxi Look
Ciao from Italy! We’ve been in this beautiful country for almost a week and are currently wrapping up our stay in Positano – seriously one of the most stunning places I have ever visited in my life. Every corner is picturesque beyond words and all the photographs you’ve seen simply do not do these views justice! It’s amazing and a much-needed getaway, but at the same time I’ve found myself thinking about home and all the things I need to get done when I get back. BUT – I am trying really, really hard to live more in the now and be present in the moment.

Being Present in the Moment

Being present is something I have always tried to be mindful of, and a huge part of what led me to begin practicing yoga 5 years ago (something I really need to get back into). It makes sense – research has shown that dwelling on the past and negative makes us more likely to be depressed. Waiting for the future to be happy also leads us to be unable to enjoy the present. Whether you’re always dwelling on the past or looking to the future, the problem is that you aren’t living in the now. Of course, we are ALL guilty of doing both, myself included!
Being Present in the Moment | The Luxi Look

Being Present in the Moment | The Luxi Look
For me, I find myself often looking to and planning for the future – great for preparation, but not great for living in the moment. It is also hard to be present when our attention is split between several different tasks at once! A huge part of being present has been putting away the phone for me. I’ve noticed myself and others being on our phones constantly when in the presence of friends. Such a terrible habit that has become so socially common/accepted! I am really trying to make a point to put my phone down when I around the people I am with and give them my full attention.

Social media is also related to this.

I’ve talked about social media not being real life in the past and I stand by this. Real life is ALWAYS > Instagram. Being present and in the moment and not constantly staring at your screen looking at other people’s lives is something I want to practice more over the rest of the year. In fact, if we are hanging out and you see me on my phone, PLEASE call me out on it! My goal is to be able to focus on what is in front of me in that moment, and nothing else.

As cheesy as it sounds, I felt much more grounded and present when I was practicing yoga regularly – which is why I’m considering picking it up again. I have yet to find a yoga studio I absolutely love and adore in LA, so if you have any favorites, please send them my way!! Meditation/Buddhist podcasts are also a helpful tool – I listen to them during my commute to and from work. My favorites are episodes of Audio Dharma led by Buddhist teacher Gil Fronsdal (I’m not Buddhist, I just love his talks and the messages he delivers).

How do you stay present?

xx, Amy
