Happy Sunday!! Normally I like to be out and about during the weekend, but since I’ll be traveling for most of the second half of this month, it’s been a quieter weekend at home. With that said, there’s nothing I love more than a little “me time” to decompress and calm myself so I don’t get the Sunday Scaries. Yep, the Sunday Scaries are real – it’s that feeling of anxiety that starts to come over you as the weekend comes to an end and the work week looms ahead of you. If you know what I’m talking about you know it’s not fun, but it’s ok! Let’s talk about getting over the Sunday Scaries and what you can do to make the most of your weekend.

When I used to travel every week for work, I always got hit with the Sunday Scaries and would dread my Monday 4am wake up calls and the thought of spending another week away from home. Now that I work locally, the Sunday Scaries hit a lot less hard, but they definitely still happen from time to time.

How to get over the Sunday Scaries

+ Do one exciting thing during the weekend.

Also, figure out your weekend style. Do you like to go with the flow and take it easy, or are you a go, go, go kind of person? My weeks tend to be busy, so I like to reset on the weekends. I try to give myself one day a week where I don’t make any plans or have any expectations for myself. Lately it’s been tough to follow through on that plan, but it is one of my goals for the year.

+ Plan something to look forward to over the next week.

It always helps to have something to look forward to! I also treat myself to something small on Monday mornings to make the jump back into the work week a little easier, whether it’s sleeping in, a trip to my favorite coffee shop before work, or a tea date with a girlfriend.

+ Prep your mind and body for the week.

Make time to clean your apartment and take care of yourself. It’s easy to fall into the trap of saving all of your errands for the weekend and then feeling overwhelmed. See if you can get some done over the week or if you can outsource certain chores. If you’re having a particularly crazy weekend, make sure to load up on vitamins and water. Don’t feel like hitting the gym? Make movement fun during the weekend! Go on a hike, run by the beach, try a new fun workout class.

The weekend is your time to explore and get out of your comfort zone! These photos were taken during an early morning field trip to Griffith Observatory – the skies were hazy but you still got a beautiful view of the city! I love doing things early in the morning and feeling the sense of calm as the rest of the city wakes up slowly.

+ Rest Sunday night.

I have a pretty strict no plans on Sunday night rule. I try really hard to stick to an early bedtime on Sunday so I don’t wake up Monday totally exhausted. It really helps to start the week on a good note mentally and physically.

+ Change your mindset.

Once I realized the Sunday Scaries were all about my perspective and how I was choosing to view the situation, I realized I didn’t have to dread Mondays anymore. Not going to launch into a rant about how you need to find a job you love so much you don’t stress about Mondays. Instead, once I challenged myself to focus on the positives in my life and view Mondays as a chance to get back into my routine and start fresh, Sundays felt way less scary. This is true whether your love your job or not! If you can view the start of a new week as a chance to hustle and an opportunity to grow, you won’t get the Sunday Scaries as badly!

How do you deal with the Sunday Scaries?

Fresh off a 7 day Barry’s Bootcamp challenge (yep, that’s 7 classes in 7 days). I literally cannot move, my body is so sore. I didn’t think my body would be able to handle 7 days in a row of such intense exercise! While I’m happy I was able to push myself to complete the challenge, I’m actually pretty relieved it’s over. Back to my 3x/week workout plan, haha! I will say that Barry’s Bootcamp is the best workout I’ve ever done for my body, and since starting to take classes (at first sporadically, now somewhat more consistently), I’ve been able to see a real change in my body.

Read: slowly maybe gaining some muscle definition? Anyway, for those of you that aren’t familiar with Barry’s Bootcamp, it’s a form of HIIT. What is HIIT, you ask? HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. It has been proven to be one of the most effective ways to lose weight and tone up fast! With swimsuit season HERE and intimidating as ever, if you’re looking to shape up quickly, you definitely want to be doing HIIT.

What is HIIT?

HIIT, or High Intensity Interval Training, is an exercise method in which you alternate between periods of high intensity exercises (read: really hard) with low intensity exercises. For example – sprinting on the treadmill for 30-60 seconds, followed by walking or jogging for 30-90 seconds.

Why is HIIT effective?

By switching between high and low intensities, HIIT has been shown to burn more calories and fat than steady state exercise and boost your metabolism. It’s effective and allows you to shorten your time at the gym with all the benefits and then some. If you hate the thought of an hour on the treadmill or the elliptical machine, then you definitely want to incorporate more intervals in your life! I’m heading to Europe in two weeks and in anticipation of being in a swimsuit 24/7 I’ve definitely been trying to ramp up my workouts. HIIT is a great way to do so!

And of course, one of the best ways to motivate myself to hit the gym is by buying a new gym outfit. Whatever it takes, right? ; )

Look cute while training with my favorite edgy workout wear picks:

Cropped Star Hoodie

As you already know, I have a huge soft spot for anything with stars on it. This cropped hoodie is perfect for throwing on over a sports bra and running to the gym, going on a hike, running errands, or even just laying around the house.

My Favorite Sports Bra for HIIT

This sports bra has gotten me through the toughest workouts! It’s especially great for high intensity workouts as it provides medium support (for small to medium chests) which is perfect for anything from weight lifting to spin to pilates class.

The BEST Leggings Ever by Varley

Love the material Varley uses for their workout clothes, not to mention they always come in the coolest prints and most flattering shapes. You probably already have 10 pairs of basic black leggings, so opt for a pair with some mesh detailing. (Black + mesh panels = super slimming pant!).

Get To-and-From the Gym in this Mesh Jacket

Very into mesh details right now, can you tell? This jacket is simple yet edgy (love both black and white versions!) and at $25 (!!) is the ideal breathable layer to bring with you as you go to and from your workout this summer. I have the black version and I love it!

A Must Have Printed Cut Out Sports Bra

As you can tell, Strut This makes some of my favorite workout clothes. This cut out sports bra is different than the usual basic sports bra so you’ll be sure to stand out at the gym.

Light as Air APL Sneakers

These sneakers really are SO comfortable! One of my favorite bloggers, Marianna Hewitt wears these all the time. I knew I had to snag a pair for myself. The all black is classic. It goes with everything, but these light as air sneakers come in so many fun colors; including rose gold, my fave!.

How are you shaping up for summer?

You guys. I saw a movie this week in the theater, the first time I’ve gone all year. And I cried. A lot. Not super proud of this. But when I got home and went on the internet, I realized I wasn’t alone. In fact, tons of people on the internet were admitting to crying during the movie.

Some of you may already know this, but during the week I work a full time job in the entertainment industry. I won’t bore you with the details of my work, but I do want to touch upon this time of year and the movies that are coming out. Now that we’re into summer blockbuster season, all of the studios are putting their best foot forward out with their biggest movies of the year, hoping for massive hits. So I like to think that when I see movies in the theater I’m just doing my job ; ).

All the Feels Around Female Superheroes and Empowerment | by The Luxi Look

All the Feels Around Female Superheroes and Empowerment

When I first saw the trailer for Wonder Woman I wasn’t really all that impressed. I’ve seen my fair share of superhero movies (again, just doing market research!) and while they’re consistently ok to enjoyable, they never really blew me away. From a business and consumer perspective, I understood the appeal of a female superhero and applauded Hollywood’s decisions to finally give Wonder Woman a chance on the silver screen and allow a female director, Patty Jenkins, to lead the charge.

What I didn’t expect was how much I would come to love the film, and how I found myself crying unexpectedly less than 10 minutes into the film. And again several times again later on in the film. What was happening?!

Hoping I wasn’t the only one that had this strange reaction to seeing Gal Gadot fight the bad guys in Wonder Woman, I searched Google high and low for the following: “why did Wonder Woman make me cry?

All the Feels Around Female Superheroes and Empowerment

All the Feels Around Female Superheroes and Empowerment | by The Luxi Look

This article summed up my thoughts perfectly.

Representation is important. The overwhelming dominance of men (and particularly white men) in powerful roles throughout cinema and in media generally is taken for granted, and we don’t even realize the absence of other people — and how it affects us in real life to see or not see images that reflect us on-screen.

Why should these stories — and the telling of them — be the exclusive province of men? Women are bursting into tears in theaters because they didn’t even know how much they wanted and needed this.

If girls and women can see themselves depicted as powerful women in their own right (as opposed to being the girlfriend or wife of a main character), it makes an impact.

So. Many. Feels.

I get that this isn’t a big deal for everyone – but the reaction many are having to the film is incredibly powerful. Seeing Wonder Woman as such a strong, inspiring character on the screen and then seeing that translating into the film’s incredibly box office success speaks volumes about the state of the industry. The reactions and conversations that have come as a result of this film is also tremendous. For me, the film really resonated with me on a personal level, especially when I think about the kind of space I want my blog to be. I’m beyond proud to be part of communities of strong, driven girl bosses – from the blogging community, to the media and entertainment industries, to my best friends from college.

What many people don’t realize is how empowering fashion can be.

How what you wear can be a direct reflection of your mood and personality and how fun it is to express yourself through your outfit. BTW – Wonder Woman’s uniform was on. point.

My style continues to evolve – but I always tend to gravitate towards bright colors, patterns, and prints (with a scattering of neutrals). Bright colors make me happy, they’re the sometimes much needed reminder to be positive, look on the bright side, and always remember to create my own sunshine.

That’s why I continue to love pieces from Australian line Mister Zimi. I’m wearing the Charlie jumpsuit in red, but I also love it in this print and this print.

What makes you feel strong and empowered?

We are officially into swimsuit season everyone! The start of summer can lead to anxiety and panic around looking ‘swimsuit ready’ (which we’ll cover in a series of posts over this summer, from the mental aspect of feeling confident in a swimsuit to the actual physical components of looking and feeling your best). Something I can say from personal experience – if you find the perfect swimsuit that not only fits well but is actually flattering, you might be much more inclined to hit the pool all summer long. Even if you’re only wearing a swimsuit a handful of times a year, quality does matter! That’s why I’ve rounded up a variety of different types of swimsuits to wear this summer.

My Favorite Picks: Different Types of Swimsuits to Wear This Summer

Marysia Venice Bikini

How cute is this blush colored swimsuit?! It also comes in black if that’s more of your thing. Marysia suits are classic and incredibly well made (I LOVE the Antibes bikini) – they hold up well whether you’re sunbathing or in the water and the scalloped material is so flattering as it doesn’t tug or squeeze any parts of your body you don’t want to be squeezed.

Lovers + Friends Bikini

We all know gingham is the it print this year, so finding a gingham printed suit to wear is a no brainer. The ruffle detail is not only feminine, it can also help create the illusion of curves if you are straighter framed or small chested.

Kaohs Little Black Bikini

This little black bikini is hot, hot, hot! Especially love how the skinny straps and bandeau shape are a little different from the usual triangle or halter tops. The brand “Kaohs” is new to me and so far I’ve loved every piece I’ve seen. Definitely thinking of scooping up this top for an upcoming vacation.

For Love & Lemons Triangle Bikini

Everything For Love & Lemons is so good, and their swim collection is no exception. This white bikini is minimal and simple, but the fabric and cut will leave you feeling way more comfortable and confident than you would in any other teeny suit.

Solid and Striped One Piece

My absolute favorite suit from last summer. Taylor Swift + squad are fans. You can’t beat the flattering vertical stripes, figure flattering material, and low back. Cheeky but not too revealing – perfect for any family engagements you may have this summer. It also comes in so many fun colors, it’s hard to resist scooping up more than one.

Stay tuned for more fun summer and swim related posts!

Stop what you’re doing RIGHT NOW. Have you heard of FROSÉ? If you have, then you’ll want the recipe below to make at home. If you haven’t yet, you’re welcome : ).

Rosé has been the ‘it’ summertime drink for years now – there’s nothing better than a chilled glass of dry, crisp Whispering Angel during the warmer months (although let’s be honest, rosé is acceptable any time of year in my book). The term “summer water” is very accurate.

Now imagine the frozen slushy version of rosé, known as frosé.

Frosé is arguably the best drink of the summer. Think I’m crazy? Then you need to try it for yourself. The frozen and slightly versioned of rosé is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. You can find it at bars across the country, OR you could make it yourself at home. You can probably imagine how excited I was when I stumbled upon this frosé recipe from Bon Appétit.

Disclaimer – I am not the best in the kitchen, but this I can handle. You’ll definitely want to drop everything you’re doing and make this right now.

Yes Way Frose - Frozen Rose Recipe | by The Luxi Look

Frozen Rosé aka Frosé Recipe from Bon Appétit

  • 1 750 ml bottle hearty, bold rosé (note: stay away from the usual dry, crisp rosés that are good for easy drinking, like your Whispering Angels or Miravals. Be sure to choose a darker, pinker, sweeter version of rosé – the flavor will be diluted when you make the frosé)
  • ½ cup sugar (substitute with any sweetener you prefer)
  • 8 ounces strawberries, hulled, quartered (+ more for garnish)
  • 2½ ounces fresh lemon juice

Put rosé in a pan or Ziploc bag (we opted for a bag) and place in freezer. Wait impatiently for rosé to freeze. It took about 4 hours for a bottle to almost solidify in our freezer.

At the same time or in advance, make the simple syrup! Sounds fancy but it’s really just taking the sugar + 1/2 cup water and mixing together over low/medium heat until it dissolves completely. Take the syrup off the heat and add strawberries for 30 minutes before draining out the seeds. Yep, you just made fancy STRAWBERRY infused simple syrup.

If you’re feeling lazy/don’t want to commit to becoming a mixologist, you can also buy premade simple syrup or just make the syrup and then purée strawberries and mix them together. Or not use any sugar at all. Totally up to you!

Take frozen rosé, lemon juice, and simple syrup (add to taste, although the recipe calls for 3 1/2 oz) and blend in a blender. Add ice and continue to blend until you’ve achieved the optimal slushy consistency.

Pour into glasses, garnish with a strawberry or wedge of lemon, and serve! Enjoy!

Make it for yourself + all your friends and thank me later. Hope you love frosé as much as I do!
