It’s tax season! I know… SO exciting. Let’s face it – taxes suck. Accounting was one of my least favorite classes in school and to this day is something I have zero interest in. However, if you’re earning an income, you have to pay your taxes. As someone who has worked a 9-to-5 and filed taxes as a full time employee for the past five years, I can tell you how different filing taxes as a blogger/freelancer/small business owners is.

I am NOT a professional (nor do I claim to be), and the very first thing I would recommend is to find someone who is! Because trust me, this is NOT something you want to do on your own. Leave it to the professionals. Taxes for bloggers are more complicated because your income is not automatically withheld from every paycheck. You receive your gross income over the course of the year and are expected to pay taxes on that amount at the end of the year. When you work for a corporation, these taxes are automatically taken out of each paycheck. So if you’re looking for tax tips for bloggers and freelancers, read on.

Let’s Talk Money: Taxes for Bloggers

Everyone handles tax season differently. As I mentioned above, taxes for bloggers can be complicated because they are paid differently than your typical W2 employee. Bloggers can be paid directly by brands and companies that they work for, they can have multiple streams of income, and they can even pay themselves through a company they have established. Some people do their own taxes, but I personally did not feel comfortable doing mine on my own. After doing a lot of research online, talking to friends in a similar employment situation, and speaking to my accountant, I wanted to share the most important tips for bloggers & freelancers to help you manage tax season.

Tax Tips for Bloggers:

+ Find an accountant you trust.

Referrals are best, because then they have already been vetted by someone you know and trust. If you can’t get a good recommendation, then do your research online and read reviews carefully. A good accountant will charge a couple hundred dollars or more (this is tax deductible the next year) and absolutely worth the investment. The way I see it, time is money, I’m not an expert in the tax law, and I want to make sure things are done the right way. Paying someone ensures that your taxes will be filed properly and you will be able to maximize all of your deductions (this is very important for bloggers! >> more on this later).

+ Get a head start on tax season.

Like many things in life, this is not something you want to procrastinate on. If you have an accountant, it’s as easy as staying organized and meticulously keeping track of all business related income and expenses throughout the year so you can pass it on. This will make your accountant’s life easier when filing your taxes as well!

You need to report ALL of the income you earned over the past year – this income includes sponsored posts, consulting, affiliate revenue, product revenue, etc. – all of this is considered taxable income. A brand will issue a 1099 form if they paid you over $600 over the past year – be sure to save these and give to your accountant so they can keep track of your blogging income. However, even if you do not receive a 1099, you still need to report the income earned –  it’s very important to do this properly in the event you ever get audited by the IRS.

+ Stay organized.

I highly recommend keeping a spreadsheet to track everything throughout the year. I have one where I keep track of collaborations (brand, deliverable, timing, payment & terms) and expenses. Also, I recently signed up for Quickbooks and pay $5/month for the Self Employed App, which helps me track this information and have a holistic view of my blogging business in the current year as well. You can also track mileage through this app, which you can deduct at the end of the year.

+ Open a business bank account.

This is so important for keeping finances separate and organized for your business entity.

+ Save a portion of every paycheck.

Because bloggers do not pay taxes upfront, you are expected to pay an estimated tax every quarter, as well as self-employment taxes. Even if you are a full time employee somewhere else, if you earn income on your blog, you will have to pay taxes for Social Security and Medicare that are traditionally paid for by an employer and employee. The point here – you will have to pay taxes afterwards. A safe rule of thumb is to save about 30% of every paycheck. This way, in the event that you end up owing a large amount of income in taxes, you already have the money ready and do not have to dip into savings. The amount owed will change based on your deductions, which takes me to my next point…

+ Know what you can and cannot deduct.

The benefit of owning your own business is being able to deduct business expenses from your taxable income. What this means is you are able to subtract your business expenses from your total income. Then pay taxes on the remaining income. However (!!) not everything is tax deductible, and this is where things can get a little dicey. According to the IRS, a business “may deduct ordinary and necessary expenses for conducting a trade or business.”  The IRS defines ordinary business expenses as those that are “common and accepted in your trade or business.” They define necessary expenses as those that re “helpful and appropriate for your trade or business.” So what does this mean for bloggers?

First, you have to be making a profit after three years. If you have more deductions than income for over three years, the IRS will consider your blog a hobby as opposed to a business, and will not allow you to take these deductions going forward.

Some expenses that you should be able to deduct because they are directly business related include:

+ Advertising

+ Website hosting & anything else related to running your website – this can include web design, graphics, logos, and freelance help.

+ Photography expenses – editing software & equipment

+ Office supplies and furniture used for your business (if your home can be considered your office, you may also be able to deduct a portion of your rent and utilities)

+ Electronics (your computer & camera)

+ Conferences related to blogging

+ Mileage tied to blogging related activities

+ Travel and entertainment directly related to blogging. This can be dicey. You cannot take a vacation overseas, post twice, and then consider it a business expense. Talk to your accountant as what can or cannot be classified as a travel related deduction.

Expenses that you cannot deduct (sorry!) include beauty related expenses (hair, nails, makeup) and clothing (that would be nice, though!).

When it comes to tax law, there is a bit of gray area around deductions. How you handle this is ultimately up to you and your accountant. However, many experts agree that generally it is better to err on the side of caution. So be slightly more conservative than aggressive with the expenses you deduct.

Hopefully this post helped shed some light on how to manage tax season as a blogger (or similar freelancer!). I know taxes can be incredibly intimidating and not fun to say the least. However it is so important to do them the right way! Again, I highly recommend working with a professional on this matter, especially as your business continues to grow. However, these are some of the basics. So they should help you get an idea of where to begin on your taxes.

By now I’m sure you know what festivals you’re planning on attending this year. If you’re headed to Coachella next month, you might be wondering what to wear. Festival style continues to one of my favorite occasions to dress for. There is something so fun about putting together outfits that are a little more out there. It’s fun to dress different than what you would wear on a typical day. I tend to go for more of a boho look and feel, but the sky is really the limit! Today, I’m featuring two of my favorite brands for festival style – Raga and Sticks + Stones.

Festival Season On My Mind

If you’re not sure where to shop for festivals, I recommend checking out Revolve, Planet Blue, Van de Vort, or Luna B. You can’t go wrong at any of these retailers. They are all SoCal based and have bohemian festival style on lockdown. You’ll be sure to find the perfect outfit for frolicking around the festival grounds all weekend long. For ideas on what to wear to a festival, check out previous posts herehere, and here.

Accessories

For accessories, I am obsessed with the statement jewelry and backpacks from Sticks + Stones. I may be biased, as the owner is a close friend of mine, but how amazing are these bold statement necklaces?! I also carried this backpack with me last Coachella. It was so easy to use and functional, and I received so many compliments on the unique shape and style. I love the line for statement pieces that completely transform your outfit. Perfect for the boho festival goer as well as if you’re going for a little bit of a grungier rock and roll kind of look. I LOVE the necklaces with an all black outfit.

I also cannot recommend belts from B-Low the Belt enough. Belts are an easy way to take your outfit to the next level, and B-Low the Belt makes the cutest ones that range from super trendy to more basic. I’ve had my Barcelona belt for years and still wear it almost every week with denim or around a looser dress.

My dress photographed here is from Raga. I love a light, flowy mini dress belted for the day with boots or sneakers. But I also love a good maxi dress moment as well. Be sure to pack sunglasses (preferably ones you don’t mind losing), sunscreen, and a hat to protect you from the intense desert sun!

As some of you already know, I spend most of my week working a full-time job. I also moonlight in the evenings and on weekends I’m all in as a fashion and lifestyle blogger. My wardrobe reflects this, since I often am running from the office to an event at night.

This year, I’ve put weekday events on a back burner as I’ve been focusing more on my corporate job and everything that comes with it. In a corporate environment, you need to look the part – my weekday wardrobe tends to be more practical and functional than fun and avant-garde (not to say you can’t be super stylish at your 9-to-5, but having a uniform works for me!).

Something I’ve struggled with for years is finding the perfect affordable work bag. One of my biggest gripes with handbags has always been the seeming lack of quality options at a mid-range price. Purses tend to seem to go from affordable and contemporary to high end and luxury – with very few options in between!

Finding the Perfect Bag for Work with Radley

Thankfully, I came across Radley, which offers quality basic leather handbags around $300 and under – exactly what I was looking for in a tote bag for the office. No obvious labels, sturdy handles, functional details (ZIPPERS!), and enough structure to stand on its own. It fits all of the essentials, too – I keep a planner, my wallet, and makeup for touch ups (brow gel, nude lipstick, and eyeliner) inside to help me transition from office to happy hour.

I have the tote bag, but I really love this satchel and this backpack as well. Black is always a safe choice for the office, but camel, grey, and taupe are beautiful for spring as well.

What’s your favorite bag for the office?

Last week I wrote about the concept of getting “summer ready” and jump starting healthy habits. We want to look good, but we also want to feel good, and that starts with what you put in and on your body! Realistically, summer also means wearing fewer layers and showing some more skin. One clothing trend that continues to go strong year after year is the crop top. I thought this would be a one or two season trend, but here we are, still rocking all sorts of different crops all year round. I’ll be the first to admit, crop tops are intimidating! Especially if you’re like most girls and don’t always feel confident about your mid section. But with some strategic styling tips, you can put your best foot forward and confidently wear a crop top!

Learning to Love the Crop Top

+ Debloat naturally.

Lots of posts coming on this topic (because nothing ruins a crop top moment like a little pesky bloating), but cutting down on junk food and avoiding certain healthy foods (like beans and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts) go a long way! In a pinch, Heather’s Tummy Tea also works wonders! I sweaaar by this stuff in the summer and on beach vacations.

+ Showing less is sometimes more.

You don’t have to bare it all! Cropped tops are made to be worn with high waisted bottoms, so you don’t have to show that much skin.

+ Layer up!

Throw a blazer or denim jacket over your crop top for a look that’s casual and chic.

+ Don’t be afraid to wear a matching set.

Another trend that has stuck around for a couple years. Here, I’m wearing this super comfortable flattering crochet two-piece from House of Harlow – top here, skirt here). I’m loving this trend for festival season as well!

As a longtime reader of Into the Gloss (top shelf fan for life!), I was ecstatic when they launched their in-house line of beauty products, Glossier. I waited a long time before purchasing Phase 1 and Phase 2 for myself (I know, totally late to the party), but I’m excited because I feel 100% ready to give an honest Glossier review. I’m a super loyal Sephora customer (embarrassed to admit I’m VIB Rouge) and always like to try on beauty products before buying, but I made an exception to the rule for Glossier.

Maybe it was the marketing or the super cute packaging, but I knew I had to try it for myself. One thing I noticed when doing research prior to purchasing, was how hard it was to find honest reviews. Bloggers and YouTubers alike seemed to give complimentary reviews, but the actual site doesn’t have a section for customer reviews.

everyone says they're low maintenance it's okay, neither are we quote

Yep – even the box the products come in is cute.

After years of using their products, I thought I’d do my own HONEST Glossier review of the products and have you see for yourself if the products are worth purchasing.

[ FYI – this post isn’t sponsored in any way. ]

[ TL ; DR – overall, Glossier products are mostly hits for me. The price point is fair and they will work well on most skin types. Are they life-changing? No. Are they good for skintypes that need a little more love or extra care? Also probably a no. I wouldn’t use only Glossier products and nothing else. But mixed into my skincare routine with other products, I’m a huge fan. My faves are the boy brow, milky jelly cleanser, haloscope, and priming moisturizer rich. If you’re interested in trying any of the products out, here’s my link for 10% off your first order. ]

An Honest Glossier Review

Phase 1:

Glossier’s motto is skin first, makeup second. Phase 1 consists of 4 makeup products that get your skin ready for makeup (or no makeup at all, if you’re blessed enough to go without wearing any!)

four products of glossier for Glossier Review

Milky Jelly Cleanser

My personal favorite product in the Phase 1 set. I’m in love the jelly-like consistency/texture and the subtle rose scent. My skin is somewhat sensitive and haven’t had any issues with this cleanser whatsoever. So, I use it to remove all traces of makeup without any irritation. I have several cleansers I love and use already. However, this one is a permanent player in my rotation. I’ve already gone through 5+ bottles and have it in the travel size as well.

A bottle lasts me almost 6 months. I keep an extra in a bag in my car and use it after the gym and before going to bed. If I need a little extra exfoliation or deep cleaning for my skin, I add a powder exfoliant.

Priming Moisturizer

I think this moisturizer is a nice compliment to the cleanser. It isn’t really thick or moisturizing enough for nighttime or when my skin needs an extra boost, but I like it for daytime and I feel like it has made my skin softer and plumper. If I apply makeup on top, it seems to go on smoother as well. Thumbs up for this product, but I haven’t repurchased.

Balm Dotcom

Honestly, I’m not sure how much better this is than using vaseline or Aquaphor, but I do really like it. I’m sure I would love the coconut version even more. It’s a solid lip balm but for the price, I’ll probably stick to my usual drugstore balm.

Perfecting Skin Tint

Probably the thinnest foundation I own. It’s way more watery than any tinted moisturizer I’ve ever tried – maybe I could have gotten away with this light of foundation when I was in high school? I use the shade “dark” and don’t see too much of a difference in my skin when I use it, but I think if you layer it on it does smooth out minor imperfections. If you’re looking for a smoother and more flawless coverage, I would pass on this. Truthfully, I think it’s best for people who already have close to perfect skin.

Phase 2:

After you’ve primed your skin with phase 1, it’s time for phase 2. In general, Glossier products are for the makeup minimalist. They may not be the best if you’re going for a more full-on glam face, but if you’re looking for a “I woke up like this” natural look or just trying to enhance your natural beauty, they might become your new favorite products.

Glossier products and sticker for Glossier Review

Boy Brow

This stuff is GOLD. My new go-to brow product. I use the shade “brown” even though I have very dark brows. This is by far the best brow mascara I’ve ever tried. I want to hoard this stuff in case it ever gets discontinued, which I don’t see happening because everyone seems to love it. It fluffs up and thickens your brows and keeps them in place all. day. long. (Update: I’m on my 10th tube and still loving it).

Stretch Concealer

Not the biggest fan of concealer but this formula is extremely buildable and doesn’t seem to crease as the day goes on. I got it in shade “medium” but wish I had purchased in a darker shade. It functions as a bit of a highlighter since the shade is slightly lighter than I would prefer for my under eye circles.

Generation G

Probably the only miss out of all the products I tested. The tube seems small for the price, the product is somewhat drying, and the shade I purchased, “Like” is meant to be a “your lips but better” shade when in reality it doesn’t show up much unless I use several layers. Maybe fairer skinned girls will have better luck? I will try out the other shades as well and report back.

After testing out the entirety of Phase 1 and Phase 2, I can say that there are a few items that will become permanent standbys in my beauty lineup. My favorites by far are the milky jelly cleanser and the boy brow (as beauty bloggers say, “holy grail status”), I do love the priming moisturizer as well. For real though, in this 100% honest Glossier review the rest of the products get a solid thumbs up as well, but if you’re not looking to buy the full sets, I recommend the milky jelly cleanser and boy brow above all.

Update: since I wrote my original review, Glossier has launched several new products and I’ve also scooped up some of the other products I hadn’t tried yet.

Priming Moisturizer Rich

Shortly after I wrote this blog post, Glossier launched its Priming Moisturizer “Rich” formula. Since I have drier skin I purchased it instantly and it’s one of the better Glossier products IMO. Really love how moisturizing it is and I haven’t had any issues with it on my dry/sensitive skin. I really think it’s a great moisturizer for the price and have since repurchased – love this so much more than the original Priming Moisturizer.

Sunscreen

The launch of Invisible Shield SPF 35 came just in time for summer (although you really should wear sunscreen year round!). Unfortunately it didn’t quite work with my skin, the jelly consistency and scent seemed to irritate my face and I ended up with bumps over my face. If you’re an SPF newbie it’s worth trying out but I feel like for the price (it’s only a 1 oz. bottle) there are equally good if not better sunscreens out there. I’m going to give it another shot and will let you know if the results are any better.

Haloscope

Didn’t expect to love this nearly as much as I do. If you’re going from that “lit from within glow” this product delivers! I love how easy this product is to apply. If you brush it along your skin it doesn’t go on too heavy. all you need is a finger to blend. It’s basically foolproof, easy to layer if you want a little more glow, and super subtle. Some might say too subtle, but I say nay! I’ve fooled all of my coworkers and friends with this highlighter. I even stopped using my beloved Becca. Which now looks TOO shimmery compared to Glossier’s version. I have all three shades but have yet to find the best purpose for TOPAZ (bronze-y shade that I expected to love). I alternate between Quartz and Moonstone for everyday and I just absolutely love them.

Cloud Paint

Not the biggest fan of blush, but these gel-based ones are easy to use (I just apply with my fingers) and extremely build-able. I can see why some people would love these, but they just didn’t work on my skin as well as I wanted them too. Haze and Puff were too pink for me, and Beam felt too orange. I did like Dusk (more of a mauve shade?), but overall this would be a pass for me. If you love blush though, it might be worth a try!

Solution

So happy Glossier came out with an exfoliant!! This one seems to be getting rave reviews. Largely due to the three active acids in the product that claim to help smooth skin, clear up acne, and minimize pores. I really love it as an everyday, gentle exfoliant. It’s not as strong as other at home peels or acids in the market, but I think it’s a fantastic intro to AHAs/BHas. However, if you’re looking for a good powder cleanser or exfoliant, I honestly think any of these powder cleansers work just as well.

Lash Slick

I’m a little on the fence about Glossier’s new mascara. On one hand, it’s perfect for a “I woke up like this” look – it takes your lashes and makes them a little better. On the other hand, when I wear mascara, I want DRAMA. I think this product works well, but it’s just not what I’m looking for when I’m buying a mascara. If you already have gorgeous, thick lashes, it’s worth testing out – I do love the formula! I just personally need a little oomph. Or lash extensions ; ).

Needless to say, I’ve been converted and I’m now a devoted Glossier fan. I make it a point to try every new product when they launch and continue to repurchase my favorites. Glossier gets a solid YES! from me any day.

xx, Amy
