It’s been a while since I did a style post! Sorry for being MIA on the #ootd front – I’ve been trying to incorporate some lifestyle and wellness posts into the mix. What do you guys think so far? Yay or nay?! Anyway, I thought it would be a good time to do a little refresh on the topic of what to wear to a wedding. You’d be surprised how often people have questions about what to wear to a wedding!

Now, let’s talk about what to wear to a summer wedding.

First, let’s break down the different dress codes and what they mean.

Black Tie

Think very formal dress code. You want to wear something dressy – a floor length gown is usually the most appropriate, although some high low styles may work as well. Black tie doesn’t mean boring, though! You do not have to wear a long black dress – you can certainly add in colors and prints! If you’re not sure, always ask the bride or err on the side of being conservative.

For men, a tuxedo is required.

Black Tie Optional

Similar to black tie, but slightly less formal. A long dress is still appropriate, but you’ll likely be ok to wear shorter styles or a jumpsuit.

For men, a tuxedo is optional. A dressy suit will work as well.

Beach Formal

Dressy beach attire. Forego the typical beach outfit and opt for something a little nicer. A long sundress or summer dress is fine for the occasion.

Men should still opt for a suit and tie, but can choose less heavy materials such as linen.

Keep in mind you will probably be outside, so be sure to bring sunglasses and a hat or umbrella to shade you from the sun!

Dressy Casual

Lean towards cocktail attire. Dresses are appropriate, but you could also opt for a jumpsuit or a conservative two piece.

A casual suit and tie for men is appropriate.

Casual

Resist temptations to show up in jeans or sweatpants and still do your part to look nice. You don’t necessarily need to show up in a gown or suit and tie, but choose something that is comfortable but nice for the occasion. After all, you’re still a guest at someone else’s special day!

In terms of a summer wedding, I am loving brightly colored and printed maxi dresses. This yellow maxi by Arrive Clothing stopped me dead in my tracks.

Ok, I’m being a little dramatic. But HOW GORGEOUS is this color?! I know mustard is having a moment this season, but this bright yellow is so beautiful and full of sunshine!

Right away, I checked out Arrive’s entire collection and couldn’t believe how fashion forward the designs were at the price point (most items are around $100!).

Unfortunately this dress is sold out (fingers crossed it comes back in stock) – but I rounded up a bunch of other cute dresses from Arrive (seriously my new favorite brand) that would be perfect for attending a wedding! Check them out below and let me know what you think.

Tie-dye reminds me of being kid. It reminds me of summer camp and having no worries. Nostalgia aside, I love tie-dye for a pop of color (subtle or not). I’m personally a huge fan of tie-dye, but don’t let the bright colors and print scare you away if you’re more of a minimalist. If you’re looking to incorporate the trend in a less intense way, look into a lighter colored tee or incorporate it into your athleisure wear. Shop the trend out below!

Tie Dye Styles

+ Kimono – the perfect swim cover up. If you’re wary of the trend, Forever 21 is a good place to look for more affordable options.

+ Pullover – major camp vibes here. Wear this to and from the gym, or get the matching sweatpants as well to wear as a set.

+ Off the Shoulder Top – a more subtle take on the print, love this paired with white denim.

+ Cut Out Dress – love the resort vibes from everything Jonathan Simkhai this season.

+ Dress – this dress has been on my list for the past few months – love this print and style for a beach vacation!

+ Tee – a fun twist on a basic item.

+ Swimsuit – one of my favorite swimsuit brands (Solid & Striped) did a collaboration with one of my favorite denim brands (Re/Done) and the result is this fantastic tie-dye one piece (on sale!).

+ Hoodie – NSF makes wonderful, albeit pricey hoodies. But I love the more faded, washed out colors on this one.

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and, according to some arbitrary rule, the time when wearing all white becomes acceptable for the next few months. White is by far my favorite color to wear and always has been. I realized I haven’t posted many of my outfits on the blog recently (although if you follow me on Instagram you’ve probably already seen them!) – so I wanted to do a few spring style roundups on the blog.  Because I am all about white for summer, I am starting with some of my favorite all white pieces and looks from the past couple months.

We all have crazy workdays! I have to admit it can be difficult to truly “unwind” after a long day of work and staring at a screen. For me, the last thing I want to do is stare at a screen more or have to be “on” – hence why the frequency of blog posts has come to a halt over the past month. In many ways taking a digital detox has been great for my mental health and attention span. But I continue to always look for more ways to unwind and clear my mind after work. Here are some suggestions I received from close friends and loved ones that I have been taking to heart; and actually helping me relax after work.

How to Relax After Work

Journal

Maybe it’s the fact that I’m getting closer to 30 and my memory isn’t as good as it used to be. But journaling has become a much larger part of my daily routine. I recently read and loved Michelle Obama’s book. I heard from a friend that one of the reasons her book was so vivid and fantastic is because she has kept avid, detailed journals for most of her life. Although my life isn’t nearly as exciting, I’d like to think that there are some nuggets in there that I will like to pass down in the future. For those of you who journal more regularly, do you prefer digital or paper?

Read

I shared my winter reading list back in January along with a lofty goal of 30 books read by the end of the year. I actually made decent progress on the list but still have a long way to go before I hit my goal for the end of the year! Reading is something I find so therapeutic. It brings me a lot of joy! So I am really trying to make a point of making it more of a habit than an afterthought. Any tips or suggestions for incorporating more reading into your everyday life? If only I could spend the two hours a day I spend in the car driving to and from work reading. (Yes, I’ve tried audiobooks. No, I do not like them as much as reading).

Turn off devices

Another lofty goal but one that my boyfriend and I have made a joint decision around. It can be tough to do given the nature of both of our jobs, but our goal is as little time on devices as possible once we are done for the day. In this sense I feel fortunate my job is not a full time blogger. I don’t actually *have* to be on social media all day long.

Catch up with friends

Between work and managing a blog I’ll be the first to confess, my personal life more often than not goes to the wayside. Work/life balance is a challenge for everyone, but there really is nothing more relaxing than catching up with a good friend over a drink or good meal. The older I get, the more I value true, genuine friendships (and recognize how difficult good friends are to find!) and recognize the importance of keeping in touch with and cultivating relationships that are important to you. Like all things worth having, good friendships require work and effort (from both parties!).

Go to a yoga class

Honestly, I love a good relaxing yoga class. I don’t mean a crazy yoga sculpt or vinyasa class (although I do love those as well!). But a yin or restorative yoga class. I used to be obsessed with hot vinyasa yoga and yoga sculpt, but these days I’m all about a slower pace and more sustainable workout routine. Also, the idea of doing yoga with blocks and blankets is more appealing than chaturangas after a long day of work. I also have aspirations to meditate more, but view yoga as an appropriate substitute as well. The combination of restorative yoga + meditation does wonders for relieving stress.

Create a skincare routine

Light a candle (I’m a sucker for Diptyque candles even if you are literally burning money). Put your products to work! More often than not, I get lazy and just wash my face and slap on night cream. But I find the process of creating a spa like atmosphere, making a cup of sleepy time tea, and actually following my multi step skincare routine to be incredibly relaxing. The perfect way to get ready for bed.

How do you like to relax after work?

With summer right around the corner, I’ve got my eye on sun dresses and easy two piece sets to wear outside. So, I’ve talked ad nauseam about how I’ve rethought my shopping strategy and overall tried to be more thoughtful and conscious about how I spend, so I wanted to highlight some more affordable brands and sites for clothing (under $100!) that I have been loving for summer pieces. Although I generally try to stay away from fast fashion for environmental and ethical reasons, but will take a look from time and time and see some pieces I really like.

Best Affordable Brands for Summer Style

+ MINKPINK

It has been one of my favorite brands for some time because everything by them is just so easy to wear. So, it’s always comfortable, on trend for the season (love the color of this orange set that I’m wearing in photos, also comes in pink), and affordable. Also, I love this linen dress (just picked up in white!) and this printed dress with a cut out back. Their swim is super cute as well!

+ Amuse Society

Effortless California cool style that you can take to the beach and back. So, if you’re looking for an easy, no maintenance look, check out Amuse Society. I have my eye on some of their oversized shirts and kimonos for upcoming beach vacations.

+ Superdown

Recently launched brand by Revolve. I just checked it out and was surprised by how cute everything is. Also, they have a range of pieces that can take you from day to night. Also, some of the items feel a little more appropriate for the college set, but there were some crops and dresses that still looked relevant for those of us in our late 20s : ).

+ Sage the Label

A new to me LA brand that gives off major Reformation vibes for a fraction of the price. I’ve been wearing this blazer and short combo for the past couple months and aside from being terrified of spilling something on it, I can’t stop wearing it. For now you can find the best product selection on their site.
