It’s hard to believe I’ve been blogging for almost four years. My blog has always been a balancing act with a full-time job, including some internal role changes and moving to a new company a year ago. As tough as it’s been, it’s also incredibly rewarding.

It has not always been easy balancing the two, as blogging is incredibly time-consuming and a very real career on its own! But I’ve found a balance that works (for me) and learned a lot along the way on how to manage it all. I wanted to share my experience because I know there are a lot of other people doing the same (juggling a “side hustle” or multiple side projects with their 9 to 5 jobs) and it can sometimes feel overwhelming. From how I schedule my shoots to tools and resources you should invest in (whether it’s doing outreach to brands using cold call email or a scheduling tool for your social media accounts)

Since I started my blog I’ve watched so many girls make the transition from working full time to being a full-time blogger. I’ve also met countless others who dived straight in without any hesitation. The truth is, it doesn’t have to be – you just have to figure out what works for you.

Part Time Blogger Tips

+ Prioritize

This is the most important thing by far. We all have the same 24 hours in a day. As much as I wish I could do it all (aka have my cake and eat it too), the reality is I can only do so much in a day without completely sacrificing sleep and burning out completely. Personally, I have always prioritized my career first. Blogging is a priority as well, but only after I finish everything in the office.

If I do plan on working on my blog during the week, it happens in the morning before I leave for the office or in the evening, typically after 8pm. On the weekends I try to make a very targeted plan of attack and tackle high priority blog items (shoots, campaigns, and writing blog posts), typically at the expense of social plans. I don’t do this every week, but making lists and prioritizing the 1 or 2 things that have to get done every day makes it feel much more manageable than trying to handle an overly ambitious to-do list. Then there are days, and even weeks, that the blog ends up on the back burner. I try not to beat myself up over it and be too hard on myself.

Working full time and blogging is not for everyone but it’s what works for me

Having your own blog or side project is such a wonderful outlet and the skills you learn through building something on your own are transferable to anything you choose to do next.

I know a lot of girls thinking about starting a blog have a clear goal of making it their full time job and make money blogging. If that is your vision, by all means make a plan and prioritize the steps that it will take you to get there! If you work full time but want to make the transition to working for yourself as a blogger, it will take extra work and sacrifice, but it is totally doable if you stay laser focused and constantly remind yourself of your goal.

+ Schedule time to write regularly

Even though many bloggers don’t even have a website anymore, writing has always been important to me. I’m a firm believer that you only get better at a task if you dedicate time and focus to improving. It’s an easy thing to let fall to the wayside, but blocking in my calendar to write, even if it is only in 20 minute increments, makes a huge difference in helping me push content out on my page. Even if the internet says blogs are dead, I beg to differ – search engines are still key, and I’ve seen my traffic to my blog grow consistently over the past few years.

+ Be efficient at shoots

Because I cannot shoot every day or at the drop of a hat, preparation is everything. Efficiency is of the upmost importance when it comes to content creation if you are working full time – I like to batch my looks and create mood boards and shot lists in advance of shoots so I make sure I do not miss anything and can meet campaign requirements and deadlines. If deadlines are tight I make sure to communicate dates and expectations in advance – brands understand that not everyone is a full time blogger or works from home and has the flexibility to shoot anytime.

+ Spend time on your blog every day

Whether your goal is to be a full time blogger or not, this is very important. The most well intentioned goals won’t be met if you do not dedicate time towards reaching them! Inaction is one of my absolute biggest pet peeves. Spending time, even if it’s just a little, on your blog every day will pay off in dividends. It can be hard to stay motivated to shoot content, post on social media, edit photos, and write blog posts when you are already juggling so many other things. But if you commit even 15 minutes a day to a small tasks or research, you will see growth and success over time. You can absolutely monetize your blog over time; reading up on affiliate marketing and other social media platforms is still productive over the long run.

+ Collaborate with other bloggers

If you are looking to grow, networking and collaboration is a great way to do so. I saw tremendous growth when I was attending events regularly and meeting other girls. Over time I made friends in the industry as well – it is always worth investing in yourself and network.t

+ Outsource important tasks

I highly recommend doing this! As much as I would love to do everything myself, I have to prioritize (see the first point above) where I spend my time. For example, one very time-consuming piece I often outsource is photography. I would much rather invest my time and money on a good photographer who understands my vision and can shoot efficiently, than spend all weekend taking photos and editing them less well. This doesn’t mean I don’t think creative direction and photography are important – they so are! – but if you are pressed for time, I encourage thinking of various tasks that may be better to outsource.

+ Put yourself first

Again, it is important to practice self love and self care. At the end of the day, you are no good for anything if you are completely burned out and miserable. If I am exhausted after work or not feeling super social, I will not attend events. Now that I am in busy mode at work, I RSVP “no” from the get go often. I also will try to only have plans 2 nights during the week so I can save time for myself. If I know I have a busy week of work, I will schedule shoots and campaign deadlines later. Burning the candle at both ends is not sustainable. I’ve learned over time that it simply isn’t possible to say “yes” to everything. It all comes down to prioritization and your goals.

+ Don’t be afraid to ask or pay for help!

When it comes to being efficient, at some point you have to outsource some tasks. It’s not about working harder, but smarter. Invest in your mental health and business by identifying areas you don’t love doing (whether it’s graphic design, video editing, etc.) and outsource it! As your side hustle grows, you’ll also want to start paying for some tools to make things easier on yourself. If you’re an e-comm business, investing in good email marketing is key. Maybe you want to do outreach to promote yourself or your product. The key is to identify your weak areas and find someone who does them well so you can free up time to do what you’re best at.

Any other girls balancing a full time job and a blog or side hustle? What does “balance” look like for you?

White accessories are always risky. If you’re even the tiniest bit careless, you can end up staining or ruining them for good. At the same time, white goes with everything, especially in the summer. Even if you aren’t ready to commit to white shoes, you need a pair (or two) or white sneakers in your closet.

I recently received this pair from Foray and have been wearing them multiple times a week. I love how comfortable they are to walk in and how you can style them with jeans and a tee or a dress. They’re the perfect everyday shoe no matter your style. I’ve linked some of my favorite pairs below – the best part is you can find a stylish pair at any price point (most of the shoes below are ~$100) and you’ll find yourself reaching for them all the time.

+ Nike Air Force 1 – you can’t go wrong with any variation of this shoe. A more urban twist on a white sneaker but still versatile.

+ Adidas Yung 1 – for the dad sneaker lovers who don’t want to shill out $900 for Balenciaga.

+ PS821 – love that these are all leather and have subtle detailing along the sides. Easy to wear to work if your office allows that.

+ Superga – I like this version with the platform, the canvas is durable and comfortable and the extra height is nice. I will be taking these with me on upcoming trips!

+ Common Projects – if you’re looking to splurge, look no further. If you invest in a good leather cleaner or find a good cobbler you’ll be able to keep these in good shape and pristine for much longer.

I’m really excited about today’s post. It’s been a while since I did a feature and interview of another blogger/influencer. I really want to bring these back! Today’s interview features my colorist, Ashleigh Marie from Carachele Salon in West Hollywood. I’ve been seeing her for over a year and not only is she super talented and savvy; she is super sweet and down to earth. Oh, and she has amazing health and beauty tips! So read on for her best hair tips and more below!

Ashleigh Marie

Introduce Yourself.

I am a colorist, extensionist and beauty blogger bouncing around from LA/NYC/ and Montreal.  I’m a born and raised LA native with an obsession to all things beauty, specifically hair.  I specialize in bright blondes, dimensional brunettes and seamless extensions that are all low maintenance requiring only a 3/4 month sessions.

How did you get into hair?

I first was introduced to color when I was six and started coloring my own hair after ogling the Victoria Secret catalogues my mom received in the mail.  After giving everyone in my family makeovers, I soon found the opportunity to attend beauty school while in high school and jumped into the program.  I earned my cosmetology license before graduating high school. It was my fascination with beauty that lead me to Beverly Hills to mentor under some of the biggest celebrity stylist.

After assisting for only 3 short years, I was promoted at Meche from assistant to senior stylist at the Tracey Cunningham Salon and eventually made my way to Carachele Salon where I slay hair and create bonds with my inspiring clients.

What’s your hair philosophy?

Less is more.  I believe processing the hair less, meaning ditching old over highlighted locks for a more dimensional, low maintenance look is better not just for your hair, but your pocket book and your time.  And time is money!  As much as I would love to see my lady’s lovely faces every 6-8 weeks, it is better to let the hair rest and let some of the root grow so you have dimension to work with.

When it comes to extensions, I install keratin bond extensions individually to match the density of your hair.  Meaning, I don’t add more hair to your hair than what it can handle to keep it healthy.  When you attach bonds that are too large for the section of hair, traction alopecia can occur where the follicle can’t handle the added weight it must support and goes dormant.  I try to get my clients to see extensions as a short term solution, to look at what the underlying cause for the hair loss is.  Most of my clients actually transition out of regular extension use to growing their own real hair and kicking them all together.  I don’t believe in long term use, and I really pride myself in being a stylist who cares for the health of your hair and for you as a person.

What advice would you give to girls that don’t live in LA on how to find a colorist and take care of your hair?

So we are lucky to live in LA where most of the top colorist live, but if you don’t live in LA, I would suggest to do your research. Instagram is a great tool to find a stylist with work you love and I would search hashtags in your area to do so. Something like #chicagohair #sfhairstyist #seattlehaircolor to find someone local, but be aware of IG’s who’s photos look filtered.  I never filter any of my photos on IG because I am selling color and tone that are altered when a filter is add and I believe doing so is false advertising.  Go with someone who seems genuine and the photos look real.

I recommend to all my clients to take supplements and have a diet high in the vitamins and nutrients to feed your hair.  This can be a multivitamin or eating a healthy diet to a hair pill, either way it’s about consistency and having strong hair start from the inside.

What are your favorite hair products and why?
Also maintaining healthy hair by using sulphate free shampoo, and a good hair mask for moisture is essential.  I don’t recommend too many products but I do love Oribe, Amika and Virtue.  Making sure your irons for styling are below 380 is a big tip to not damaging your hair and keeping it healthy, anything passed this temperature is burning your hair.  Turn it down girl!

How do you stay healthy?

I am a big believer in the philosophy that beauty starts from within.  Meaning mind, body and soul are connected and will radiate outward.

So at the top of the health pyramid is the mind, so I like to keep my mind sharp by having a balance between work and life as well as a career that is fulfilling my sense of purpose.  I also like to read at night and wind down turning off my phone once I hit the shower and really see it as a spa experience to pamper myself and read a good book before going to bed.  Good sleep is essential and I get a minimum  of 8 hours a night in a cold, dark room.  I also go to therapy regularly, which I have been doing for 8 years.

I really feel like when you are at peace mentally you have such a positive energy that really looks beautiful.

My body I keep sharp by starting with a big jug of lemon water I put on my nightstand the night before and finish before I am allowed to look at my phone.  I try to work out first thing in the morning, fasted and usually about 6/7 am.  I like circuit training classes, pilates, yoga; gym workouts 5 days a week.  I try to eat a low carb paleo diet 80% of the time with 3 cheat meals a week approximately unless I am on vacation.  I like to ensure I am fueling my body with a variety of nutrients; but I find that organic whole foods, and protein works best for me.

As far as my soul I try to do as much as I can for others and practice kindness.  I think disconnecting from phones and connecting with others and serving them is what life is about.  I find that dancing, going for a hike, and meditating really revives my spirit.

Today’s post is all about a subject that is very, very important to me, and is written in partnership with OLLY. As always, all opinions are my own. The topic of today: SLEEP! I’ve written about sleep before and why it’s so important for you. Long story short, it impacts and improves pretty much every area in our lives – mental, physical, emotional. It’s called “beauty sleep” for a reason! When you sleep enough you are restoring your body and giving it the energy it needs to function at its best.

Sleep repairs your body from workouts, improves your skin and appearance, helps maintain your appetite and weight, improves our brain function and concentration, and enhances your mood… I could go on and on about sleep. The problem is, getting enough sleep is something I struggle with at times. Between work and travel I don’t always get the recommended 7-8 hours. Truthfully I often only get 5 or 6 hours of sleep a night – which is a terrible habit and something I do not recommend!

With that said, I have started implementing a nighttime routine to force myself to be more conscious of how I spend my evenings and prepare for bedtime. Here’s what it entails:

My Nightly Routine

+ Eliminate Devices

It’s easy to lay in bed, scrolling through your Instagram feed and getting sucked into the rabbit hole that is social media. If you struggle with getting enough sleep, eliminating devices at least one hour before you go to bed is a must. It helps your mind begin to unwind and settle down – if you have thoughts racing through your head all night it is much harder to fall asleep!

+ Skincare Routine

For me, having a set skincare routine is incredibly therapeutic and calming. I love going through the process of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing before bed. A few times a week I will try a new mask as well.

+ Read

Instead of being on my laptop or phone before bed, I have been reaching for a book. I’m still trying to reach my goal of reading 30 books by the end of the year (!!) and I have found that reading is more enjoyable and helps me fall asleep faster.

+ Journal

Getting into the habit of journaling is still new to me. I don’t always know what to write about, but even 5 or 10 minutes help me feel more centered. Also, knowing I will have something to look back on and reflect in a few years is incredibly motivating!

+ OLLY – Beauty Sleep

The very last thing I do before bed is take an OLLY gummy. Melatonin affects everyone differently, but I found these gummies to be more gentle than others I have tried. It helps me fall asleep (and stay asleep), but I don’t have crazy dreams or wake up groggy the way I do after other supplements I’ve tried.

How do you get ready for sleep? xx
