summer dresses

With summer right around the corner, I’ve got my eye on sun dresses and easy two piece sets to wear outside. So, I’ve talked ad nauseam about how I’ve rethought my shopping strategy and overall tried to be more thoughtful and conscious about how I spend, so I wanted to highlight some more affordable brands and sites for clothing (under $100!) that I have been loving for summer pieces. Although I generally try to stay away from fast fashion for environmental and ethical reasons, but will take a look from time and time and see some pieces I really like.

Best Affordable Brands for Summer Style

+ MINKPINK

It has been one of my favorite brands for some time because everything by them is just so easy to wear. So, it’s always comfortable, on trend for the season (love the color of this orange set that I’m wearing in photos, also comes in pink), and affordable. Also, I love this linen dress (just picked up in white!) and this printed dress with a cut out back. Their swim is super cute as well!

+ Amuse Society

Effortless California cool style that you can take to the beach and back. So, if you’re looking for an easy, no maintenance look, check out Amuse Society. I have my eye on some of their oversized shirts and kimonos for upcoming beach vacations.

+ Superdown

Recently launched brand by Revolve. I just checked it out and was surprised by how cute everything is. Also, they have a range of pieces that can take you from day to night. Also, some of the items feel a little more appropriate for the college set, but there were some crops and dresses that still looked relevant for those of us in our late 20s : ).

+ Sage the Label

A new to me LA brand that gives off major Reformation vibes for a fraction of the price. I’ve been wearing this blazer and short combo for the past couple months and aside from being terrified of spilling something on it, I can’t stop wearing it. For now you can find the best product selection on their site.

By now, wedding season has officially kicked off for the year and you may be wondering what to wear. Once you know what the dress code is, you can figure what to wear that’s appropriate but still chic. Just because it’s a wedding, doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with your outfit! Here are some of my fave brands and options for not so basic dresses to wear to a wedding.

+ For Love and Lemons

You really can’t go wrong with anything from For Love and Lemons. Perfect for the girl who wants to stand out in a crowd, their dresses are anything but basic and always make a statement. As a personal lover of all things For Love and Lemons, I fell in love with this floral yellow maxi that is perfect for spring. The collections definitely straddle the line of what’s wedding appropriate (avoid anything too short!), but their maxis are gorgeous statement pieces.

+ V Chapman Studios

I found this brand on Instagram, and have been dying to scoop up one of the dresses in this collection myself. How gorgeous is this silhouette and this mustard yellow dress?!

+ Likely

Their dresses are well made and super flattering, and come in a wide range of colors. They are a little safer, but on the plus side you could probably get away with wearing them multiple times.

+ Alice McCall

Fun and flirty styles that are romantic yet unique. When I see Alice McCall dresses I think spring and summer. The shorter dresses work well for cocktail parties or more casual spring/summer weddings as well.

+ Revolve

Revolve’s collection of in-house brands (Majorelle, Lovers + Friends, NBD) have a surprisingly diverse and very cute collection of long dresses that are perfect for attending a wedding. I linked some of my favorites below – these are all formal enough to work for black tie optional or black tie weddings.

+ Rent the Runway

When all else fails, my go-to is Rent the Runway. The service is so easy to use and you’ll never have to worry about wearing the same thing twice. If you have a lot of events coming up I recommend their Unlimited subscription – it ends up being more economical. Some of my favorite brands for dresses on Rent the Runway: Reformation, AMUR, Marchesa Notte, Nicholas, and Solace.

For many people, animal print is an eternal neutral. This trend from last fall has major staying power and is making its way into this summer’s swimwear. Along with high waisted bottoms, florals, cut outs, and metallic suits, animal print swimsuits can be found everywhere this season. This suit from Solid & Striped (from Foray!) combines two of my favorite swimwear trends – animal print and belts.

I’ve linked some of my other favorite animal print suits below for inspiration. What are your favorite swim trends this year?

For some reason, my skin tends to go haywire every time I travel. I don’t know if it’s the change in climate, routine, or something completely unrelated, but every time I take off for an extended period of time I anticipate having skin problems of some sort. Especially in the summer – I’m very prone to mosquito bites and heat rash, and all too often find myself incredibly itchy and uncomfortable. My skin also scars really easily, which is extra fun when you’re trying to wear shorts and dresses.

Thankfully, I discovered Bio Oil a few years ago and it’s become a skincare staple.

Bio Oil is a bit of a cult skincare product – if you know, you know. It’s made with natural ingredients (rosemary, chamomile oils) and then enriched with vitamins A and E – which help heal and improve skin. It addresses so many skin problems many of us have, and it’s also SO affordable (you can get it for under $20). Here are a few reasons Bio Oil should be a staple in your skincare routine and how I like to use it.

Summer Skin Essential: BIO OIL

+ Stretch marks and scars.

This is probably Bio Oil’s claim to fame – and it really does work. Whenever I get nasty bug bites or cuts that I’m afraid will turn into scars, I make sure to use bio oil every day while my skin is healing. It helps remove the discoloration and lighten the scars. It also works on stretch marks!

+ An all natural glow.

I love mixing Bio Oil with my foundation and moisturizer. It gives my skin a bit of a natural, dewy glow.

+ Moisturizing oil

Vitamins A and E are very hydrating, so I like to use Bio Oil on my cuticles, heels, and even the ends of my hair when I don’t have my usual hair oil on hand. You can even use it as a facial oil, on your elbows, lips, and and scalp.

+ Soothing scratches and cuts

The oil is filled with ingredients that soothe irritated skin. It’s perfect to use before or after shaving or when your skin is feeling irritated or tight.

+ Makeup remover

When I travel, I like to pack as light as possible. I love how multi purpose Bio Oil is – making it a summer travel essential!

Have you tried Bio Oil? xx

It’s wedding season and there is nothing more exciting than being asked to be part of someone’s special day. Of course, bridesmaids dresses are notorious for being less than flattering and despite everyone insisting that you’ll wear them again, you most likely will not end up doing so. One bridal trend I’m totally behind is picking a color or a color palette for your bridesmaids and allowing them to choose their own dress in that shade. At the end of the day you want to avoid anything that’s too revealing or distracting, but I have noticed some bridesmaids lines creating a range of dresses specifically for this person. With several weddings to attend over the next year, I have my eyes set on bridesmaids dresses by Amsale. I’m wearing the Bray dress in fawn and I can actually see myself wearing this dress again!

Listening to my friends as they plan their weddings also made me realize how important it is to not only be a well dressed guest, but also a well behaved guest! Wedding planning is stressful and not for the faint of heart, anything you can do to minimize added stress and make the day as smooth as possible will be appreciated.

Some simple etiquette tips to follow:

+ Be responsive! When the bride asks for your address, get back to her quickly. When you receive the formal invitation in the mail, RSVP. The last thing a frazzled bride wants to do is chase down her guests.

+ Don’t expect a +1. Weddings are expensive and different couples may have different viewpoints on allowing guests. As a guest, you cannot expect to be given a +1 simply because you were invited.

+ Read the invite carefully and follow the dress code. This is usually made clear on the wedding invite or website. When in doubt, err on the side of caution! If you aren’t sure if your attire choice is right, then go with a safer bet.

+ Be on time! This goes without saying.

+ Buy a gift early. This way you won’t forget, and you’ll have a better selection from the wedding registry. Lately I have been buying my gifts from Zola – they have tons of amazing gift options for any couple in your life (including experiences and cash funds). Think outside of the box gifts for the couples you love. I’ve also partnered with Zola to give you $50 credit towards your registry when you spend $500 or more. Click here to learn more!
