Can you believe we’re already a week into 2020? I feel like the last few months have flown by. I’m not the biggest new year resolution person (to be honest, I can’t tell you my most recent one), but I do love kicking off the new year with some self-care and focusing on wellness habits. By the end of last year, I was feeling a little run down and ragged.

After some much needed time away from work and blogging, I feel ready to take on a new year of challenges and goals. The most important aspect, however, is taking care of your body first. Nothing I’m committing to is groundbreaking or new, rather the below are a series of small promises and wellness habits I’ve made to myself in an effort to start putting myself and my health first.

With a new year, comes a chance to hit the restart button and refocus on your goals and intentions. As cheesy as it is, I love having January 1st to motivate me, and if we’re being honest, kick a little discipline back into my life.

Wellness Habits to Kick Start the New Year

+ No alcohol.

This is my fourth year doing “Dry January” and at this point it has become a very welcome routine in my life to start the year off on the right foot. November and December are typically the two most indulgent months of the year, and that means more alcohol than usual. We started doing Dry January as a challenge to see how we would feel after a month of alcohol. After you get over the initial crutch of alcohol in social situations, you realize that it isn’t so bad, and no one else will notice (there’s no need to scream it at the top of your lungs every time you go out, a soda water with lime will usually do the trick).

As much as I miss my regular glasses of wine, the physical and mental effects are undeniable. By the end of the month I always feel less bloated, see an improvement in my skin, and have a much easier time waking up early.

+ Water.

In a similar vein, hydration is key! I’ve made a mental note to myself to drink at least 2L of water a day. I’ve also made an effort to cut down on my caffeine and substitute coffee with matcha when I can. So water has become my drink of choice. We also have a SodaStream at home that I love, it makes drinking enough water so easy.

+ Fitness.

In the past, I’ve been into super intense bootcamp style workouts and long-distance cardio, but after feeling burned out from the impact of the exercise and some suggestions from my doctor, I’ve made a conscious effort to cut down on high-intensity exercises and cardio. I’ve been adding pilates to my routine 2-3x a week as well as resistance training and weightlifting, which I believe is a more sustainable routine for my body.

+ Sleep.

This one is super hard for me, according to my sleep tracker I average only 6.5 hours a night, which is ok but not great. The benefits of getting enough sleep cannot be stressed enough. And I know how much better I feel when I hit the recommended amount. I’d love to get above 7 hours a night, but you know, life…

+ Diet.

After analyzing my diet in-depth, I came to the conclusion that it was, like my sleep, ok but not great. Towards the end of the year, I found myself reaching for office snacks on a daily basis, eating more chips and packaged snacks than I care to admit and eating out more meals than not. After getting over the initial hump of grocery shopping and light meal prepping, I’ve found that cooking doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. My goal is to eat most meals at home, and see if it makes a difference in how I feel at the end of the month.

+ Reading.

In an effort to be more conscious about the type of media I consume, I reset my reading goal for the year (last year my goal was to read 30 books!) and am trying to choose a book over TV before bed – even though it’s much easier to put on The Bachelor and zone out after a long day. So we shall see how this goes!

How are you starting off the new year?

Everyone’s skin is different. On top of genetics though, did you know that where you live and what lifestyle choices you make play just as much of a role in how your skin looks and feels, and should influence what kind of skincare products you use? This is why although I’m obsessed with skincare, I try not to be too prescriptive on my blog about it. I fully know that what works for me might not work for someone else – and that’s ok! Finding skincare products you love is a journey, and that’s why I’m excited to be partnering today with Skinsei.

Skinsei provides a personalized skincare regimen that takes into account your unique skin problems and goals, as well as the lifestyle factors that make a difference in your skin. They approach skincare holistically and personalize the product regimens they send to you – aka they know that your skin is unique, and your products should be too!

HOW SKINSEI WORKS

First, you take a diagnostic quiz where you input all of the various lifestyle factors that impact your skin – from how much time you’re in the sun, all the way to what you eat. Then, they’ll recommend a regimen of 3 to 5 products that are best suited for you. Yes, you read that correctly. You might be thinking, “wait, what about the whole 10 step skincare system? Don’t we need to use tons of products to get maximum results?” The truth is, less is usually more – and from my visits to the dermatologist, I’ve come to appreciate a simpler and more sustainable skincare routine.

Then, Skinsei will share your customized skincare routine – what the products are and why you should use them – along with the results of your diagnostic. These results will share the areas you should focus on to improve your skin. Think of it like a prescription for your skin.

Finally, you can go ahead and purchase your customized skincare routine. Use my code AMY20 for 20% off your first purchase.

HOW YOUR LIFESTYLE INFLUENCES YOUR SKIN

You might not realize it, but the choices you make on a daily basis impact your skin. Not only how much you sleep or what you eat, but also where you live. Yes, your environment plays a huge role in your skin! Living in Los Angeles, I’ve become so much more in tune with skincare products (yes it’s true, we really are skincare junkies and skincare obsessed!) and keeping on top of a consistent skincare regimen (and wearing sunscreen everyday!). It also helps that the city has an air of zen, it really is the most relaxed place I’ve ever lived! With that said, there are some negative environmental factors that will also impact your skin.

For one thing – the pollution. Living in a big city (and spending so much time in traffic!) you’re exposed to way more pollution. Unfortunately, the air quality in Los Angeles is not the best and this will have a negative impact on your skin in the long run.

Sun exposure is another factor to keep in mind. Angelenos love a good beach day (with lots of SPF, of course!), but it’s known that too much time in the sun can lead to wrinkles – no bueno.

Other important skincare factors include exercise, diet, and your stress levels. All of these play a role in how your skin looks and feels! Skinsei not only provides product recommendations, they will also educate you on why they matter. The areas I need to focus on are getting more sleep and keeping my skin hydrated.

HERE ARE THE PRODUCTS I’VE BEEN USING

  1. Clear History No 456
  2. Dew Your Thing No 812
  3. Throwing Shade No 360
  4. Rock the Boat No 489
  5. Thirsty Face No 615

I love the simple 5 step system and have been bringing Skinsei along with me to the gym every morning. When it comes to skincare I am super results driven and so far I am not only enjoying the products, but I feel like I am more aware of the choices I make every day and how they might impact my skin in the long run. For example, I am really trying to cut down on caffeine – too much can dehydrate your skin – and sleep more, which will allow my cells to turnover and rejuvenate, and also eliminate my desire for too much espresso. So really, it’s a win win.

If you’re interested in learning more about your skin and what products are right for you, head over to Skinsei and take their free diagnostic. If you’re curious about trying out their products, you can get 20% off your first month by using my code AMY20.

Hello winter, and hello dry skin! Even if your skin is not usually dry, the winter months can be particularly dehydrating for your skin. Using different products throughout the year when seasons change can be key to maintaining healthy skin throughout the year. As someone who always has incredibly dry skin, I’ve tried what seems like every kind of deeply hydrating moisturizers and creams. After many, many years of testing and trialing, these are my favorite moisturizers.

Best Moisturizers for Dry Skin

Under $50

Glossier Priming Moisturizer Rich  – I love this product for the price, it’s one of my favorite Glossier products. It is SO much better than the original priming moisturizer (IMO) and a little goes a long way. I actually use it for its named purpose, which is as a priming moisturizer underneath foundation. Overall, a huge fan of this moisturizer and how accessible it is.

Belif The True Cream Moisturizing Bomb – one of my first forays into Korean beauty led me to this moisturizing cream. This is a very solid option for dry skin types and didn’t irritate my skin. It’s also paraben and sulfate free, which is always a win in my book.

Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Moisturizer – I’ve written about my love for this moisturizer before. I love the mild rose scent (and I’m not usually a rose person). I use it for day or night, but if your skin doesn’t need as much hydration it makes a wonderful night cream.

Dr. Jart Ceramidin Cream – I don’t know how to describe this cream, other than it made my skin… better? My skin feels firm, supple, and moisturized for hours after using it. If I were to go without any makeup for the day, it’s usually after using this cream.

Under $100

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream – this feels like an old Hollywood kind of night cream, in the best way possible. I like to think of it as the grown up version of the Glossier cream above. I’ve been using it as a priming moisturizer lately and I’ve noticed my makeup appears much smoother and my skin seems to glow from within.

Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Moisturizer – this didn’t feel quite heavy enough for nighttime, but it remains one of my favorite daytime moisturizers to date. My one complaint is the packaging – I really wish Drunk Elephant would make more sustainable packaging – but otherwise, this is my go-to, do it all moisturizer.

Kate Somerville Goat Milk Moisturizing Cream – packs a surprising moisturizing punch, despite how thin the consistency is. This is another great daytime cream if you don’t like the feeling of “heavier” creams.

Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream – a recent favorite. This cream feels so much more luxurious than the price tag and leaves your skin unbelievably soft and smooth – like a pillow, or a baby’s bottom. I use it during the day and at night although it may be too heavy for some skin types. One of my favorites out of everything listed here.

Kiehl’s Rosa Artica Youth Regenerating Cream – this is a heavy duty cream, in my opinion. I used it religiously when I lived in Chicago during the winter. It will solve all wind burn and cold related irritations. Now that I live in Southern California, I haven’t felt as much of a need to use such a thick cream, but my love for it remains.

$100+

Eve Lom Moisture Cream – great for sensitive skin (I swear there is virtually no scent) and layers nicely with all of your serums and other products. Highly recommend if you have the budget for it (at $150 a jar, it ain’t cheap).

La Mer Crème de la Mer – all right, the elephant in the room – is La Mer worth it? I’ve shared my thoughts before – it’s super luxurious and rich, and if your skin needs the extra moisture, it’ll feel like your skin is absorbing all of it in. Truthfully, I’m not sure if I can justify the price tag, and word on the street is there are cheaper drugstore dupes that are practically identical. Do I still love La Mer? Yes. But I would recommend trying a sample before committing to the full jar.

Whether you’ve already gotten a start on your holiday shopping or are more of a procrastinator, I’ve rounded up all of my favorite gifts for women for today. 2019 Holiday Gift Guide For Her

Holiday Gifts for the Beauty Guru

If she’s VIB Rouge at Sephora and is always in the know on the latest beauty launches, you’ll want to get her a luxe beauty present from one of the brands below.

+ Eve Lom Gift Set

Eve Lom is a brand that was new to me this year and has quickly become one of my favorites. Not only is the packaging sleek and beautiful, but the products have worked incredibly well and become some of my staples. This set comes with all of the essentials from the line that will make your skin glow, and in a travel size friendly package.

+ Charlotte Tilbury Glow Set

Everything Charlotte Tillbury screams Hollywood glam, her lipsticks and liners are some of my absolute favorites, but you cannot go wrong with this glow set filled with subtle shimmer that will make your skin look like it’s glowing from within.

+ Dyson Hairdryer

If there is a beauty guru in your life who doesn’t have this yet and you are looking to splurge, look no further. It’s an outrageous amount of money to spend on a blowdryer, but I promise anyone who receives it will be obsessed.

+ Le Labo Perfume

I’m certainly not the first person to fall in love with Le Labo scents, at this point they are ubiquitous but that doesn’t make me love them any less. I started with Santal 33 first but have been wearing this scent for the last few years, it’s a little strong but you will get so many compliments. The City Exclusives are worth checking as well, as are all of their other scents.

+ Cle de Peau Concealer

Truly a holy grail concealer, but if you’re looking to spoil someone for Christmas check out all things Cle de Peau. The most luxurious beauty products that any woman would love to have in their beauty bag.

+ Nars Satin Lip Pencils

As someone who finds most lipsticks too drying, these Nars satin lip pencils have been one of my favorites for years. My favorite shades are Rikugien, Exbury, Timanfaya, and Majella.

+ Glossier Skincare Set

If you’re looking for a basic skincare set for travel or the gym, I highly recommend Glossier. The price point is more reasonable and the products are surprisingly good. The Milky Jelly cleanser is one of my go tos, but I like their priming moisturizer quite a bit as well.

+ Nudesse Candle

How cute is this candle! I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t love to have this as decor in their house. Bonus points because it smells incredible as well.

+ Diptyque Candles

A go to gift anytime you don’t know what to get someone – a chic candle. Diptyque candles are classic and will bring a smile to anyone’s face.

+ Oribe Collectors Set

The ultimate haircare travel set. Oribe is expensive, but worth the price as far as high end hair products go. I’ve tried almost everything in the line and can truly attest that they make a difference and are worth the price.

Holiday Gifts for the Jetsetter

+ Grown Alchemist Travel Set

Every jetsetter knows you can never have too many travel-sized toiletries!

+ The Daily Edited Jewelry Case

Say goodbye to tangled necklaces when you travel! I’ve always wondered how to travel with jewelry and often end up not packing any. This is the answer!!

+ Madeworn Sweatshirt

I can’t board a flight unless I am comfortable, this sweatshirt is worn in and when sized up, perfect for long haul flights.

+ Fleece Sweatshirt & Joggers

If you insist on being cute but still want to be comfortable when you travel, a matching cropped set will usually work well. Cream fleece is a nice change from the usual black.

+ Passport Case

I just started carrying my passport in a case this year and it’s made it easier to locate and store, and keep my passport and other required travel documents in check. Skinnydip makes some of my favorite accessories (think phone cases and cosmetic cases).

+ Noise Cancelling Earphones

I have and love my AirPods, but these earphones from Bang & Olufsen are so stylish and would make an incredible gift for someone who is always on the go.

+ Le Spec Sunglasses

Affordable yet on-trend sunglasses are a must when you are traveling and aren’t wearing concealer.

+ Joanna Vargas Masks

Even if you aren’t about an in-flight skincare routine, face masks are necessary when you are always on the go and exposing your skin to all sorts of different climates and elements.

+ Travel Toiletry Bag

Stoney Clover makes some of my favorite pouches and travel-sized bags, they come in all colors and you can even customize them with your own patches.

+ Sherpa Jacket

Hit the road and stay warm on the plane with a sherpa jacket she’ll wear all winter long.

Holiday Gifts for the Wellness Junkie

+ Alo Yoga Leggings

Some of the most comfortable leggings you will ever wear. They come in so many different colors, they’re perfect for lounging around or a light yoga/pilates class.

+ Crystal Water Bottle

Set good intentions with this crystal water bottle – a fun twist on your typical stainless steel bottle.

+ Foam Roller

If you hit the gym often and hard, recovery is just as important as your training! Regular stretching and foam rolling does wonders for your long term health and the sustainability of your training. Investing in recovery tools & massages/treatments will go a long way if being active is important.

+ Nike Sneakers

These are appropriate for working out or just wearing out and about, there are so many color variations for slightly more adventurous dressers.

+ All Access Sports Bra & Leggings

Still one of my favorite sets to date, try to snag this set during one of Bandier’s sales if you can (Black Friday might be a good time).

+ Sakara Life Super Powder

Every wellness junkie will be obsessed with all things Sakara. A Sakara cleanse after the holidays would be a nice gift as well… 😉

+ Herbivore Botanicals Trio

Clean beauty for the bath and shower, the Coco Rose scrub is incredibly hydrating and looks gorgeous in any bathroom.

+ Eat Beautiful

A book with style, covering nutrition but also doubling as a coffee table book (you can never have too many coffee table books!), this one focuses on foods that make a difference on your skin and overall appearance.

+ Vitamix

I can’t say enough positive things about my Vitamix, I’m not much of a cook so if I could recommend one kitchen appliance this would be it. I love making smoothies, soups, sauces, nut butters, and more in this.

Holiday Gifts for the Hostess

+ Laura Mercier Coconut Milk Skincare Set

Gift the hostess with the mostest a luxurious skincare set to unwind with after all of the guests have gone home.

+ Jonathan Adler Tray

A tray with a funky design is perfect for the bathroom, bedroom, or anywhere you need a little extra storage space or organization.

+ Agate Coasters

These come in different colors and go with almost any style of home.

+ Wine Bottle Chiller

For the home decor obsessed wine lover in your life. How cute is this wine chiller! Perfect for chilling a bottle of champagne for hosting.

+ Cravings Cookbook

I can attest to how good this cookbook is, Chrissy Teigen really knows what she is doing and the recipes are approachable, fun to read, and downright delicious.

+ Throw Blanket

You don’t have to go Missoni, but a nice throw blanket is a great gift for a friend who loves to entertain or spend a Friday night in. Can you ever have too many throw blankets?

+ Stylish Coffee Table Book

Assouline makes the chicest coffee table books, this Ibiza book looks great on any coffee table, but there are others to choose from as well.

+ Le Labo Detergent

It doesn’t get more luxurious than Le Labo detergent! You can’t go wrong with Santal 33 or Rose 31.

+ Framed Photo

Bonus points if you get a print you know your friend will absolutely love!

Holiday Gifts for Her

These are the perfect gifts for the fashion girl in your life. Chic and timeless pieces she will wear for years, you can’t go wrong with any of the staples below.

+ Gucci Princetown Loafers

I’ll admit I was late to the game becoming a fan of these, but if you’re looking for a practical and timeless work shoe that isn’t a heel (because let’s be real, flats are so much more comfortable), I would go for these. They come in different colors and prints, but you can’t go wrong with black.

+ YSL Camera Bag

Every girl needs a mini bag they can throw on their shoulder for day to night, if you want to spend a little more on a designer brand, YSL makes great crossbody bags and clutches. I love the black on black in this style, but have also had my eye on a nude bag as I have too many black bags already.

+ AllSaints Leather Jacket

Every girl needs a buttery soft leather jacket in their closet, I like this particular AllSaints version for the quality of leather and fit at the price (many comparable leather jackets are easily 2-3x the price). The fit is a bit snug so if you prefer a roomier fit, size up.

+ Missoma Chain Necklace

Chains have made a huge comeback this year, but delicate versions will be here to stay. The metal is gold vermeil on sterling silver, so it isn’t as expensive as pure gold but should still last if you take care of your jewelry. Missoma is a favorite of Meghan Markle’s (recently named the most powerful celebrity dresser of the year).

+ Golden Goose Sneakers

You’ve probably seen these sneakers on everyone at this point, I love wearing sneakers with just about everything because I don’t have the tolerance for heels anymore. If you opt for another pair, I also like Veja and of course, everything Nike.

+ Camel Coat

A long camel robe coat is a fall staple, if you need inspiration just look up Hailey Bieber, she elevates a simple white T and jeans combination with her camel coat. Zara makes more a more affordable version I really like as well.

+ Fashionable PJs

Maybe it’s because I still don’t own fashionable pajamas, I just think of them as such a wonderful gift but not something most people would buy for themselves. This silky version is comfortable but not frumpy.

+ Jacquemus Mini Bag

A chic mini bag in a pop of red, every fashion girl will love a Jacquemus gift for the holidays!

+ Silk Scrunchies

I’ve been a fan of Slip for a long time, if you don’t have one of their eye masks or pillowcases yet, get them ASAP! The silk scrunchies are a nice small gift that will be appreciated by any girl, as we all know too well the inevitable mark left in your hair from a normal elastic band.

+ Acne Wool Scarf

Protect your neck and face with an oversized wool scarf. Acne makes my favorites, but I also have similar looking scarves (at half the price) from Aritzia that I adore.

This post was made in partnership with OLLY Nutrition.

Wellness With OLLY

With fall in full swing and the holidays rapidly approaching, today’s post is both timely and relevant. I’m excited to be partnering with OLLY again to share some of my go-to wellness tips to stay healthy and grounded over the holidays. It feels like once October hits, it’s full-on madness and a sprint to the end of the year.

The other day I had someone remind me we have only a little over two months left of this decade and my brain went into full-on panic mode. I feel like it was 1999 just a few days ago? Anyway, the point I’m trying to make is it’s totally normal to feel frazzled and all over the place, but that doesn’t mean at the expense of your mental or physical health. Being sick, burned out, tired, stressed – none of these are appealing during what should be the most exciting time of the year!

During the holiday season, I like to ramp up my wellness routine to make sure I’m taking all of the possible steps I can to stay healthy and stress-free.

Tips for Staying Healthy During the Holidays

+ Catch more zzz’s

One of the biggest culprits of health problems is lack of sleep. I’m currently reading Why We Sleep and it’s really opened my eyes to how important sleep is. Almost everyone needs at least 7 hours of sleep, and it’s absolutely critical for mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep is one of the surest ways to lower your immune system. So while you’re traveling and attending events, be sure to prioritize sleep!

+ Drink up

Water, that is. Load up on water, at least 1L a day. This will improve digestion and flush out toxins (hello, booze!) from your body while keeping your sky hydrated and glowing from within.

+ Stay moving

It’s easy to let your fitness routine fall to the wayside during the holiday season. But I always make a point to stick to my usual workout routine as much as I can. Not only does it keep my mind clear, I don’t feel as guilty indulging over the holidays.

+ Find balance

Of course, sometimes you gotta live! Don’t feel guilty for having a little too much champagne or indulging in holiday treats. As long as you balance it out (salad and green juice during the day, an extra-hot yoga class once a week), it’ll all even itself out. I’m all about the 80/20 rule.

+ Boost your routine with vitamins!

I’ve been taking OLLY gummies for the past year and not only love the taste, but I also love how easy they are to take. I like that I can do something good for my body that is easy to do even when I am always on the go. Their Active Immunity vitamins are tasty little gummies packed with elderberry, echinacea, vitamin C, and zinc. All known immunity-boosting supplements! I used to take all of these supplements separately (yep, I looked like I was taking 10 different medications a day) and couldn’t keep up with my vitamin routine. BUT, now that I can get my entire immunity boost in 3 gummies a day, it’s been so much easier to keep my immune system strong and wellness with OLLY

How do you stay healthy and stress-free during the holidays? xx
